Course Summary
The Carpentry & Joinery (Architectural Joiner) Level 2 Apprenticeship is designed to prepare you with the practical skills and technical knowledge needed for a career in the construction industry.
You will learn how to work with wood-based materials to manufacture and install a range of building components safely and to industry standards. This includes measuring, setting out, cutting, shaping, assembling, and fitting products such as doors, windows, staircases, partitions, and structural timber components.
What else do I need to know?
As an Apprentice, you will receive on-the-job training at your workplace and attend day release training at Boston College.
You will gain hands-on experience producing high-quality joinery products, developing the precision, craftsmanship, and attention to detail required by employers across the construction sector.
You will cover a variety of topics across key learning areas including:
- Work safety and awareness of key health, safety and welfare issues.
- Planning and carrying out work to commercial standards of quality and speed.
- Moving, handling and storing resources, such as materials and timber components, complying with relevant legislation & guidance.
- How to interpret and follow verbal and written work instructions from trade supervisors and site managers.
- Selecting the required materials to carry out the work, such as correct timber, tools, and fixings.
- Accessing, interpretting and using drawings and specifications to carry out work.
You will need to provide evidence of a Level 1 qualification in English and Mathematics to be able to undertake the Carpentry & Joinery (Architectural Joiner) Level 2 Apprenticeship.
Apprentices who do not already have Level 1 English and Maths must achieve this before taking their End-Point Assessment (EPA). Before you start, we will assess your English and Maths levels.
The Carpentry & Joinery (Architectural Joiner) Level 2 Apprenticeship will take you two years to complete. Your apprenticeship will be workplace-based, though you may still be required to attend college in person on occasions. You will be supported while on programme by your assessor. Your assessor will meet with you regularly in the workplace to review your progress against the standard. You will be visited at your workplace by your assessor at least once a month.
As an Apprentice, you will pay no course fees. However, your employer will have to pay towards your training as well as providing you with a wage. There are different rates of pay for Apprentices depending on your age and the year of your Apprenticeship that youāre in.
Aged 16-18: The current National Minimum Wage rate for an apprentice is £8.00 per hour.
Aged 19+ and in your first year: The current National Minimum Wage rate for an apprentice is £8.00 per hour.
Aged 19+ and have completed your first year: You are entitled to the National Minimum Wage or National Living Wage rate for your age.

You will be assessed by means of an End Point Assessment (EPA). This is the final test of an apprenticeship where learners prove they can apply their skills in real work situations. The End Point Assessment is made up of a short written test, professional discussion underpinned by a portfolio of evidence, and a practical skills test.
Apprentices may also be assessed at any appropriate point during their apprenticeship programme.
On completion of the apprenticeship, you will normally be a fully qualified tradesperson in your chosen area of work.
The achievement of this standard will meet the requirements of the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) āSkilled Workerā standard, which is widely accepted in the sector as a ālicence to operateā in a skilled construction trade.
The purchasing of workshop PPE is mandatory. You are also advised to purchase the course textbook which is available at around £30.00, further details of which will be provided upon the commencement of your apprenticeship.
