Bring Your Own Device

Access to a reliable digital device is an important part of learning at Boston College. Many of your course materials, resources and activities will be accessed online, so we encourage you to bring your own device to help you get the most out of your studies from day one.

What is BYOD?

It means bringing in your own device instead of relying on one of the laptops or computers provided on the Boston College campus. You’ll then be able to use your college log-in details to access Microsoft 365 platforms such as Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Teams on your device, with Wi-Fi and free charging facilities available too.

You’ll still be able to use our IT facilities if you need to, but having your own device can be quicker, more flexible and better suited to your personal learning style.

Why bring your own device?

Bringing your own device also gives you:

  • Easy access to course materials on Canvas during and outside of lessons
  • A convenient way to stay organised and connected, with the flexibility to work wherever you need to
  • Valuable preparation for university, employment and life beyond college
  • Opportunities to develop independence and confidence in your learning
  • Better engagement in lessons through quick access to digital tools
  • The ability to personalise your learning experience

What device to bring

We recommend a laptop or tablet as these are ideal for completing college work, using online platforms and staying organised. A smartphone can also help with note‑taking, research and accessing Canvas on the go.

Recommended device specifications

To ensure your device supports your studies effectively, we recommend a laptop or tablet costing around £100-£400 that:

  • Runs a supported operating system
  • Is compatible with Microsoft Office 365
  • Has a minimum of 8GB of memory for laptops or 4GB for tablets
  • Has a minimum of 3 hours of battery life
  • Offers Wi‑Fi connectivity
