Course Summary
The Level 3 Diploma in Engineering (Fabrication and Welding) is designed to provide you with the essential principles, skills, and knowledge required for a career in metal fabrication and welding.
You will develop the advanced skills necessary to interpret engineering drawings, prepare materials, and perform complex fabrication and welding operations to industry standards.
Successful completion of the Level 3 Diploma in Engineering (Fabrication and Welding) can support progression into employment or on to higher-level engineering study.
What else do I need to know?
During the Level 3 Diploma in Engineering (Fabrication and Welding) you will study many aspects of core engineering principles and specialist fabrication and welding skills, including:
- Engineering health and safety: you will learn about the statuatory health and safety regulations, risk assessment procedures, and safe working practices essential for all engineering environments.
- Engineering Principles: you will learn how to interpret technical information, differentiate between engineering materials, perform essential engineering calculations, and understand quality control in engineering.
- Principles of Fabrication and Welding: you will gain an in-depth understanding of the science behind fabrication and welding including; welding metallurgy, joint design, distortion control, weld defects and both non-destructive and destructive testing methods.
You will also learn the essential processes, techniques, and skills of fabrication and welding including:
- Manual Metal Arc, MIG and TIG welding of various materials including aluminium.
- Fabrication techniques including platework fabrication, sheet metalwork, structual steelwork fabrication and erection, and pattern development.
- Relevant employability skills including organising and managing engineering operations and advanced mathematics and science.
To study the Level 3 Diploma in Engineering (Fabrication and Welding) you must have your Mathematics GCSE at grade 4 or above (old GCSE grade C or above), or an equivalent qualification.
The Level 3 Diploma in Engineering (Fabrication and Welding) will take you 1 year to complete. You will attend college from 9:00am-4:30pm for 3 days per week at our Rochford Campus in Boston, plus independent study.
This course is free if you are under the age of 19 on 31 August of the year you start the course.
If you are aged 19+, this course will cost: £8583.
Fee remission may also be available depending on your personal circumstances. For further information, please contact the Registry Department on 01205 365701 or email fees@boston.ac.uk, or visit our Financial Support & Funding page.
Please note that all fees are subject to change.
You will be assessed through a combination of methods designed to test both your theoretical knowledge and your practical skills.
For the mandatory core units, you will be assessed by online multiple choice tests, with theory units, such as Principles of Fabrication and Welding, assessed by a formal, written exam.
Practical assessment will be through centre-devised practical tasks and will test your ability to perform fabrication and welding operations safely and accurately to required specifications. These practical assignments will be supplemented by knowledge-based tasks and short-answer question tests provided by City & Guilds to confirm your understanding of the unit content.
Successful completion of the Level 3 Diploma in Engineering (Fabrication and Welding) can support progression into a career as an Advanced Fabricator, Welding Technician, Structual Steelwork Erector, Pipefitter/Welder or a Maintenance Fitter. This qualification can also support progression onto further study and higher level engineering qualifications.
You will be required to purchase corporate work wear. This includes polo shirts, overalls and safety footware.
