Course Summary
The Motorcycle Technician (Repair and Maintenance) Level 3 Apprenticeship is designed for individuals who want to develop the technical knowledge, practical skills and professional behaviours required to work as a motorcycle technician within either a franchised dealership or independent motorcycle business.
Apprentices will work on motorcycles, scooters, all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), tricycles and other vehicles where the rider sits astride the frame. The role covers servicing, maintenance, component replacement and the diagnosis and repair of increasingly complex mechanical and electrical faults. Apprentices will also develop an understanding of customer service, workshop efficiency, commercial awareness and safe working practices.
The apprenticeship is typically completed over three years and combines workplace experience with structured training. Learners will develop strong practical and diagnostic skills while building their understanding of motorcycle systems, emerging technologies and industry standards. The current occupational standard remains approved for delivery at Level 3.

Assessment takes place throughout the apprenticeship through a combination of workplace development, practical activities, technical knowledge assessment and evidence of occupational competence.
Apprentices will be expected to demonstrate that they can safely service, inspect, diagnose and repair motorcycle systems in accordance with manufacturer specifications and appropriate industry standards. Assessment will therefore draw on practical performance as well as the apprentice's understanding of the theory behind motorcycle systems, diagnostic techniques, health and safety and fault rectification.
At the end of the apprenticeship, apprentices must successfully complete an independent End-Point Assessment (EPA). The EPA is designed to confirm that the apprentice can perform competently in the occupation and demonstrate the required knowledge, skills and behaviours of the Motorcycle Technician standard.
Successful completion of the apprenticeship provides a route into employment as a qualified motorcycle technician within independent motorcycle workshops, franchised dealerships, specialist motorcycle businesses and related areas of the motorcycle industry.
With further experience and professional development, technicians may progress into more advanced technical roles, including:
- Senior or diagnostic motorcycle technician
- Master technician
- Workshop supervisor or workshop controller
- Technical specialist
- Service or aftersales roles
- Motorcycle dealership or workshop management
- Manufacturer-specific technical roles
- Further specialist or higher-level technical training
Manufacturers may also provide advanced product-specific training and continuing professional development for technicians working within their dealer networks.
Successful apprentices may also be eligible to apply to join the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) Professional Register, providing professional recognition of their qualifications and experience.
Skills England's current occupational progression mapping also identifies transferable knowledge and skills from the Level 3 motorcycle technician occupation into other automotive and engineering occupations, although additional learning or training may be required for progression.
