Course Summary

The Introduction to Health, Social Care, and Children and Young People's Settings Diploma Level 1 is designed to introduce you to the key skills required for a career in health care, social care, or childcare.

The course will introduce key topics such as safeguarding, communication, and working in care settings, helping you to build your confidence and employability skills.

What else do I need to know?

The Introduction to Health, Social Care, and Children and Young People's Settings Diploma Level 1 will provide you with a supportive and practical learning environment where you will study a series of mandatory and optional units to support your progress.

Mandatory units include:

  • Understanding the range of service provision and roles
  • Principles and values in health, social care and CYP settings
  • Awareness of safeguarding and protection
  • Introduction to communication
  • Equality, inclusion, and health & safety
  • Human growth and development

You may also study a series of optional modules which may include:

  • Healthy lifestyles and wellbeing
  • Supporting leisure and social activities
  • Child development and play
  • Physical care of babies and young children
  • Mental health, learning disability or sensory loss awareness
  • Employability skills and personal development

Entry requirements for the Introduction to Health, Social Care, and Children and Young People's Settings Diploma Level 1 are two GCSEs at grades 2 or above (Old GCSE grade E or above), to include English and maths.

The Introduction to Health, Social Care, and Children and Young People's Settings Diploma Level 1 will take you 1 year to complete. You will attend college for 3 or 4 days per week at our Rochford Campus in Boston plus independent study.

The Introduction to Health, Social Care, and Children and Young People's Settings Diploma Level 1 is free, if you are under the age of 19 on 31 August of the year you start the course.

If you are aged 19+, this course will cost £1500.

The course is assessed using a range of methods, which include written assignments, booklets, posters, presentations and practical tasks.

Successful completion of the Introduction to Health, Social Care, and Children and Young People's Settings Diploma Level 1 course can support progression onto Level 2 study on a Diploma in Care or an Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care.

Additional costs include a Health and Social Care tunic for College, which is similar to those which carers and nurses wear in their jobs. These are approximately £20 each. These can be ordered from the College at the beginning of the year.
