The Level 3 Diploma provides you with an understanding and practical experience of specialist engineering technologies and principles. You will build on your knowledge of engineering achieved either through completion of a relevant level 2 qualification or through demonstrating at interview you have the capabilities for direct entry.

As part of this course you will study in Boston College's Institute of Technology, providing higher level technical education using specialised equipment.

What will I do?

You will study both the theoretical and practical aspects of Engineering including:

  • Engineering Principles
  • Product Design
  • Computer Aided Design
  • Pneumatic and Hydraulic Systems
  • Electronic Devices and Circuits

As well as a range of units that will give you an overview of engineering skills.

You will also continue your studies towards either a Functional Skills or GCSE qualification in English and Maths, as well as developing your skills for employment, looking at different careers and the opportunities available.

You will have the opportunity to visit a number of engineering and educational establishments to enhance your learning and experience the different careers and environments available in the engineering industry.

In addition to your course, you may also study either Functional Skills or GCSE English and Maths, dependent on your current GCSE grade.

The entry qualifications for the Level 3 Engineering Extended Diploma are five GCSEs at grade 4 or above (Old GCSE grade C or above) including English, Maths and related subjects (or equivalent) or Merit or above at Level 2 in relevant subject.

The Engineering Extended Diploma will take you two years to complete. You will attend College for at least three days a week.

The Engineering Extended Diploma is free, if you are under the age of 19 on 31 August of the year you start the course.

Aged 19+.

For those aged 19+, this course will cost: £8583.

You may be eligible to study this course for FREE should you be eligible under one of the following criteria:

  • Aged 19 or over, and earning less than £25,000
  • Aged 19 or over, and currently unemployed and receiving JSA, ESA or Universal Credit
  • Aged 19 or over and do not currently hold a Level 3 qualification

Alternatively, you may qualify for an Advanced Learner Loan to help with your College fees. If you progress to employment you won't have to pay anything back until you’re earning £25,000 per year. Your household income isn't taken into account and there's no credit check. Your eligibility depends on your course, nationality, and age. You will be assessed through exams, practical assessments and written assignments.

Successful completion of the course would allow you to progress to the Extended Diploma in Engineering for the second year, and then on to university/higher education study, local/national/international employment.

Additional costs include purchasing corporate work wear, which includes polo shirts, overalls and safety footwear.

There may be an opportunity to complete an Industry Placement alongside your main Level 3 course.

Industry placements give you the chance to put into practice what you have learned and you will have the opportunity to spend an average of 50 hours working for an employer, in a role directly relevant to your course.

With an Industry Placement you will gain technical skills, be prepared for the world of work, and gain connections in order to secure a job after your course.

  • Develop your experience and expand your CV.
  • Give yourself a head start in knowing what type of job you may want to go into after finishing your course.
  • May lead to further opportunities such as paid employment or an apprenticeship on completion of your course.
  • Take a step forward professionally, knowing the behaviours expected in the workplace.

What will I do?

  • You will take part in an average of 50 hours placement in a role that is directly relevant to your course, in an external organisation.
  • You will develop the practical and technical skills required for your profession/trade.
  • You will develop employability skills such as communication, teamwork and time management.

An existing part time job may qualify as an Industry Placement if it meets the criteria set by the College.
