The Children and Young People (Teaching Assistant) FdA Level 5 is awarded by the University of Derby and has been developed with sector employers and designed to help you to develop skills and knowledge to work within schools. All of the modules will directly relate to your working environment to help you to evaluate and understand practice in more depth.

As a University of Derby partner student, you will have access to the university’s virtual learning environment, including University of Derby Online (UDO) and online journals and texts, as well as library facilities.

What will I do?

The Children and Young People (Teaching Assistant) FdA Level 5 is a two year course.

  • Ethical Practice, Attitudes and Values
  • Work Based Reflective Practice
  • International Professional Working with Children and Young People
  • Supporting Teaching and Learning
  • The Curriculum 0-25

  • Research Methods and Practice
  • Secondary Research
  • Understanding Behaviour
  • International Perspectives in Provision and Practice: Working with Children and Young People
  • Children and Young People’s Family Rights
  • Children and Young People’s Health and wellbeing
  • Applicants must be aged 18 or over and working directly with children or young people aged 0-25 years in a voluntary or paid capacity for a minimum of two days a week.

    In order to study the Children and Young People (Teaching Assistant) FdA Level 5, you will need to have successfully completed one of the following:

    • NVQ 3
    • A Levels
    • BTEC National Certificate
    • BTEC National Diploma
    • CACHE or NNEB award
    • Open College Network Credits
    • Access to Higher Education course

    All applications are subject to approval by the University of Derby (UoD). In order for the University to approve your application we are required to share your personal information. This includes sharing the application form that you have completed to study this course, and in some instances, copies of your maths, English and highest-level qualification certificate.

    You will attend College for one day per week for two years, plus independent study.

    The course will cost £7600 per year.

    You can apply for a student loan to cover the costs of course fees. You may also be able to apply for various grants and loans to support your learning. Specific advice regarding student loans and other benefits can be obtained from www.gov.uk/student-finance.

    Assessment methods are varied and include for example, written reports, presentations, case studies, essays and reflections. Modules are sector-related, and assessment will relate to your own organisation or vocational setting.

    Upon successful completion you could progress directly into employment, onto a top up qualification at university or study the BA(Hons) Education Studies here at the College.

    If you are undertaking full time study you can apply for a Maintenance Loan, this can be used to purchase materials to assist with your qualification.
