Course Summary

The Level 3 Diploma in Food Technology is designed to prepare you for a job in a high-class kitchen or to update your current skills to develop and improve your own establishment's standards.

You will explore a variety of subjects that cover the mandatory food technology skills, helping you to develop your food technology knowledge, supporting you to progress on to further study or continue into your career.

What else do I need to know?

The Level 3 Diploma in Food Technology covers all the mandatory skills and knowledge you need to progress onto a career in the industry, or on to further study, including:

  • Exploring nutrition in food
  • Food biochemistry
  • Food testing
  • Category science
  • Food technology processes
You may choose optional units in enterprise skills to meet their learning and development needs, helping to shape your experience into one that is truly beneficial to you.
You must be aged 16 years or over to take this qualification. You do not require any prior qualifications or experience to take this qualification. The qualification assesses and recognises achievement within a learning environment and does not attract points on your UCAS tarfiff.
The Level 3 Diploma in Food Technology will take you one year to complete. You will attend College for four days a week.
Assessment on the Level 3 Diploma in Food Technology is by practical demonstration, assignments and written examinations. Each unit is graded as a pass/fail. 70% of this qualification will be internally assessed through practical and written assignments, set by the College and agreed FDQ. These assessments will be subject to internal quality assurance and externally quality assured by FDQ. The remaining 30% of assessment for the qualification will be through an internal written examination.
Successful completion of the Level 3 Diploma in Food Technology will support progression on to further study in a variety of subject areas including:
  • Food science
  • Food technology
  • Food hygiene and safety
Successful completion of the Level 3 Diploma in Food Technology will support progression on to further study in a variety of particular qualifications including:
  • Foundation Degree in Food Science and Technology
  • Foundation Degree in Food Nutrition
  • Foundation Degree in Food Manufacture
  • L4 Awards in Food Safety Management
