Course Summary

The Level 2 Apprenticeship Standard in Carpentry & Joinery is designed to support you to build the skills and competencies required for a successful career in the Carpentry & Joinery industry.

Through real-world, on-the-job training with your chosen employer, and dedicated tutor-led sessions at college, you will become confident in a variety of aspects that will support your future career.

Designed alongside industry professionals, the Level 2 Apprenticeship Standard in Carpentry & Joinery is structured with the needs and demands of the sector at its heart, ensuring you are prepared to succeed in your trade.

What else do I need to know?

As an Apprentice, you will receive on-the-job training at your workplace and attend day release training at Boston College.

The Level 2 Apprenticeship Standard in Carpentry & Joinery consists of several elements which have been identified by employers as the foundation for a competent craftsperson including:

  • Fundamental techniques of Carpentry & Joinery
  • Cutting, fastening and carving wood
  • Assembly techniques
  • Safety protocols

Additionally, you will have the option to learn about installing first and second fixing components, all while gaining knowledge in working to commercial standards, following instructions (written & verbal), planning work, and selecting appropriate materials.

On completion of this apprenticeship standard, you will be able to carry out all the activities undertaken by a Carpenter & Joiner, carrying out a range of tasks relating to the trade.

The Apprenticeship framework consists of several elements, which have been identified by employers as an appropriate set of skills to operate in their chosen job role.

Your Apprenticeship framework is made up of the following elements:

Maths - You will be required to have already achieved a Grade 4 or above in GCSE or equivalent.

English - You will be required to have already achieved a Grade 4 or above in GCSE or equivalent.

Vocational Element (Knowledge and Competence).

In addition to your course, you may also study either Functional Skills or GCSE English and Maths, dependent on your current GCSE grade.

The entry qualifications for the Level 2 Apprenticeship Standard in Carpentry & Joinery is one GCSE in English & Maths at grade 3 or above. You should also have a strong interest in the area of Carpentry & Joinery and will need to be dedicated & committed to your studies.

The Level 2 Apprenticeship Standard in Carpentry & Joinery will take you two years to complete. You are encouraged to attend college at regular intervals, but this is not mandatory. You will be visited at your workplace by your tutor at least once a month to assess and discuss your progress.

As an Apprentice, you will pay no course fees. However, your employer will have to pay towards your training as well as providing you with a wage. There are different rates of pay for Apprentices depending on your age and the year of your Apprenticeship that you’re in.

Aged 16-18: The current National Minimum Wage rate for an apprentice is £8.00 per hour.

Aged 19+ and in your first year: The current National Minimum Wage rate for an apprentice is £8.00 per hour.

Aged 19+ and have completed your first year: You are entitled to the National Minimum Wage or National Living Wage rate for your age.

You will develop underpinning knowledge and practical skills in order to advance to the final assessment. In order to be allowed through the ‘gateway’ to sit the End Point Assessment (EPA) apprentices must have successfully completed the L2 Apprenticeship and have the minimum requirement of Maths and English at level 1 and take the English and Maths tests at L2. The End Point Assessment is made up of a short written test, professional discussion, and a practical skills test.

On completion of the apprenticeship, you will normally be a fully qualified tradesperson in your chosen area of work.

The achievement of this standard will meet the requirements of the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) ‘Skilled Worker’ standard, which is widely accepted in the sector as a ‘licence to operate’ in a skilled construction trade.

The purchasing of workshop PPE is mandatory. You are also advised to purchase the course textbook which is available at around £30.00, further details of which will be provided upon the commencement of your apprenticeship.
