The Level 3 Motor Vehicle Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair IMI Diploma is delivered theory and practical workshops, covering health, safety and good housekeeping, job roles within the automotive industry, materials and fabrication and vehicle system operation diagnostics in the following subjects:
- Light vehicle Engines
- Light vehicle chassis systems
- Light vehicle transmission and driveline systems
- Light vehicle auxiliary electrical systems
- Light vehicle engine overhauls
Delivery of the qualification is supplemented by visits to major industry manufacturers, museums and shows, this helps broaden your perspective of progression opportunities following successful completion of the course.
In addition to your main course you will also study:
- Award in Hybrid/Electric Vehicle Technology

The course is a great mix of both theory and practical, allowing you time in our workshops and classrooms to experience the world of Engineering. You will also develop your skills for employment, looking at different careers and engineering employers.
In addition to your course, you may also need to study either Functional Skills or GCSE English and Maths, dependent on your GCSE grades.
The Motor Vehicle Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair IMI Diploma is free, if you are under the age of 19 on 31 August of the year you start the course.
Aged 19+.
For those aged 19+, this course will cost £5421.
You may be eligible to study this course for FREE should you be eligible under one of the following criteria:
- Aged 19 or over, and earning less than £25,000
- Aged 19 or over, and currently unemployed and receiving JSA, ESA or Universal Credit
- Aged 19 or over and do not currently hold a Level 3 qualification
Alternatively, you may qualify for an Advanced Learner Loan to help with your College fees. If you progress to employment you won't have to pay anything back until you’re earning £25,000 per year. Your household income isn't taken into account and there's no credit check. Your eligibility depends on your course, nationality, and age.
