Course Summary

The Art, Design and Media Award Level 1 is for you if you are interested in a course that covers the whole range of the Creative Arts industries. This course will allow you to try your hand at practical skills in the Creative Arts and Media sectors, including art, craft and design, creative media, photography, and video production. You will develop your knowledge of different careers within these industries, what the jobs involve, and the different pathways you may want to take to achieve your career aims. The breadth of this course will enable you to experience a wide range of different pathways, giving you the confidence to progress to further education on your chosen pathway.

This course has been designed specifically to develop practical skills and knowledge across of the Creative Arts and Media sectors, giving you the chance to experience a 'taster' of all sectors before progressing onto a pathway of your choice. You will study 2 units covering the different practices of art, craft & design, photography and video production. An introduction to employment is available alongside the career pathways needed to get to the creative career of your choice.

As a Creative, Cultural and Business student, you will have access to all our Art, Design and Media facilities, which include two art studios, ceramics and pottery studio (including kiln), photography studio and darkroom, and a television studio. You will also be using industry standard software.

What else do I need to know?

During this course, you will study 2 units covering the different practices of:

  • Art, Craft and Design
  • Photography
  • Video Production

During the course, you will also have the opportunity to complete the below qualifications:

  • Earth Week – Tackling the Climate Emergency Level 1
  • Creative Projects Level 1
  • Work Preparation Level 1

In addition to your course, you may also study either Functional Skills or GCSE English and Maths, dependent on your current GCSE grade.

There are no formal entry requirements to the Art, Design and Media Award Level 1, but an interest in Art, Design, and Media is expected.

The Art, Design and Media Award Level 1 will take you 1 year to complete. You will attend college from 9:00am-4:30pm for a minimum of 3 days per week at our Rochford Campus in Boston.

This course is free if you are under the age of 19 on 31 August of the year you start the course.

If you are aged 19+, this course will cost £1500.

Please note that all fees are subject to change.

You will be assessed through practical assessments (70%) and theory assessments (30%), including group work, work-based evidence, coursework, presentations and performances.

Successful completion of this course would allow you to progress to a Level 2 qualification in Art and Design, Graphic and Digital Design, Photography or Media.

Additional costs educational visits and/or workshops, which cost approximately £30 per year. You will also be expected to provide your own art and design materials, including sketchbooks to document your work and musical instruments (if you wish to use them).
