The Education Studies BA (Hons) Top-up is a University of Derby validated course. The course will provide an excellent progression route for those who have completed the Foundation Degree in Learning Support/Education or Early Childhood and wish to complete further studies.

Those who are working within the education sector, i.e. early years, schools, further education and hold a qualification other than a Foundation Degree may also wish to consider studying this course.

What will I do?

During the BA (Hons) in Education Studies Top-up qualifications, the independent studies is a core module (40 credits) and you are required to engage in an independent project based around your individual vocational situation or educational interest.

You will have some taught sessions to guide you, however, this is independent module will require you to manage it further to your day in college.

During your time at College you will study the following modules:

  • Independent Study in Education
  • Entrepreneurial Education
  • Left Behind and Left Out - Social Exclusion and Education
  • The Future of Education
  • The Science of Learning and the Art of Teaching

It is also recommended that you undertake a study placement, if you are not employed or volunteering in an appropriate education setting. You will need to make you own arrangement securing a placement and undertaking the relevant procedures that are required by the organisation. This would include a DBS check, which you might be required to pay for.

The entry qualifications for the BA (Hons) in Education Studies Top-Up are 240 credits at Level 4 and 5.

For example a Foundation Degree, in a related subject area (Education or Early childhood). Other Level 5 qualifications will be considered on an individual basis.

Please note, all applications for the BA (Hons) in Education Studies Top-Up will be passed to the University of Derby for final approval.

Your offer to study with us will be conditional as all applications are to be approved by the University of Derby.

All applications are subject to approval by the University of Derby (UoD). In order for the University to approve your application we are required to share your personal information. This includes sharing the application form that you have completed to study this course, and in some instances, copies of your maths, English and highest-level qualification certificate.

The Education Studies BA (Hons) Top-Up will take you one year to complete. You will attend College every Wednesday, 1:00pm - 8:00pm.

You will also be expected to undertake a substantial amount of time undertaking independent research and study.

The Education Studies BA (Hons) Top-up will cost £7600.

Fees may vary depending on personal circumstances, please enquire for further information.

You can apply for a student loan to cover the costs of course fees. You may also be able to apply for various grants and loans to support your learning. Specific advice regarding student loans and other benefits can be obtained from www.gov.uk/student-finance.

The Education Studies BA (Hons) Top-up’s modules will be assessed through written assignments, essays, case studies and independent study.

There is no final examination.

Completion of the BA (Hons) in Education Studies (Top-Up) Level 6 will allow you to progress into employment, or onto a Masters Degree level course
