Your Future in English

Functional Skills or GCSEs

Which is Right for You?

Functional Skills help you develop practical English or maths skills you can use in everyday life and at work. Theyโ€™re a great choice if you want to improve your confidence, gain a qualification, or prepare for employment or further learning.

GCSEs give you a more in-depth understanding of English or maths and are widely recognised by employers and colleges. Theyโ€™re ideal if you want to progress to higher-level courses, apprenticeships, or university.

If youโ€™re unsure which to choose, think about your goals: Functional Skills focus on practical skills for life and work, while GCSEs prepare you for further education and career opportunities.

Hear what our students think...

โ€œIn my first year I took GCSE English, this helped me adapt to the English culture and to speak fluently.โ€

Andy | GCSE English

โ€œThe College has helped me to progress from an Entry Level ESOL course all the way up to studying a Level 3 Uniformed Public Services course. I have also had the opportunity to gain qualifications in English and Maths. The College has improved my confidence and I am now looking to progress onto University.โ€
