The BA (Hons) in Creative Arts (Top-Up) is a University of Derby validated course. It is a contemporary, multi-disciplined Top up level 6 qualification for students who are looking to make their mark as innovative, highly skilled and entrepreneurial creative professionals.

The purpose of the BA (Hons) in Creative Arts (Top-Up) is to develop student’s mastery of their craft, gain valuable leadership and management skills, provide a platform to explore innovations in their professional field to equip them for advancements in the diverse, dynamic creative industries, and to develop the entrepreneurial skills needed to thrive in the ever-evolving creative economy.

The qualification aims to widen access to self-employment and workplaces and enhance the career prospects of those who undertake them. This qualification has been designed to meet the needs of the contemporary creative industries. This dynamic and rapidly changing sector of the global economy covers a diverse range of subjects, including those of art and design, media and film, photography, graphic design, fashion, performing arts, and music. The nature of this qualification is intended to provide students with opportunities to explore the creative industries through a self-managed curriculum that prepares them for working in the local, regional, and national creative industries.

What will I do?

The BA (Hons) in Creative Arts (Top-Up) is a one-year course that builds on skills and knowledge gained at Level 4 and 5 on Foundation Degree courses or from a Higher National Diploma (HND). You will have the advantage of working in a small group to allow for a focused and tailored approach to your studies, taking part in real-world assessments with live briefs from external clients and work with an interdisciplinary team of creative peers.

The BA (Hons) in Creative Arts (Top-Up) is made up of core modules, designed to allow for open and holistic assessments, allowing you to specialise your work to your own creative career pathway.

Modules within the BA (Hons) in Creative Arts (Top-Up) include:

Independent Research Study – 40 Credits.
Application of Study to the Creative Industry – 20 Credits.
Innovation in Creative Arts – 20 Credits.
Professional Advancement in Creative Arts – 20 Credits.
Creative Exposition – 20 Credits.

You will have access to Boston College's creative facilities which include, printmaking, paper making, drawing, painting, sculpture, textiles and fashion, photography, portable theatre setups, dance studios, recording studios, DJ technology rooms, Apple Mac computers and industry standard software, rehearsal rooms, a large recital hall, iPads, film making, photography studio, darkroom, film and TV studio, library, art shop, studio space and computer suites.

All applicants will be invited to attend a one-to-one interview with a member of the BA (Hons) in Creative Arts (Top-up) delivery team. All applications are managed by the Learner Services Department within the College, and interviews are planned for one evening per month. Students should have an interview within 20 working days of the College receiving their application. Applicants will be treated on an Individual basis and will consider students that may not hold all the qualifications outlined below.

Entry criteria:
A Merit or Distinction on a relevant Higher National Diploma (HND).
A Pass profile on an FdA in Creative Arts or related subject.
A relevant Level 5 qualification with a minimum of 240 credits.
Level 2 qualification or above in English (e.g., GCSE or Functional Skills).

All applications are subject to approval by the University of Derby (UoD). In order for the University to approve your application we are required to share your personal information. This includes sharing the application form that you have completed to study this course, and in some instances, copies of your maths, English and highest-level qualification certificate.

The BA (Hons) in Creative Arts (Top-Up) will take you one-year to complete. You will attend College for one day a week for your taught sessions. You will also be able to use the creative arts facilities to undertake the practical aspects of the Top Up. This will be independent time and may be part of the 60 study hours required for each unit within the BA. These hours will also include reading and completing written assignments.

The BA (Hons) in Creative Arts (Top-Up) course fee will be: £7600.

There will be a mix of Practical and Theory based assessment. You will be assessed through group work, case studies, course work, presentations and work-based evidence.

The assessment of BA (Hons) Creative Arts Top Up qualification is criterion-referenced and you will provide evidence in the form of assignments which are assessed against the unit learning outcomes and assessment criteria.

Upon completion of the BA (Hons) in Creative Arts (Top-Up) you can develop your career in the creative industries sector through entering employment, continuing existing employment or founding your own creative business.

Additional costs may include:
Books - £100 approx.
Trips - £400 approx.
Equipment - £200 approx.
Kit - £50 approx.

You may need to buy a start kit of basic art materials. Most equipment will be supplied by Boston College, but some materials may need to be purchased. This will depend on your chosen specialist pathway.

Appropriate trips will be organised, there may be some funding available, but this is still to be confirmed.
