The Pearson BTEC Level 5 HND in Animal Management course will develop your knowledge and understanding in factors related to animal behaviour and welfare. The course is aimed at learners who want to further progress their careers within the animal sector. You will benefit from small groups and high levels of support whilst studying on this programme.

The animal industry is a growing industry with lots of career opportunities within the sector such as working in zoos in the UK and abroad, links to conservation, supporting animal welfare such as working within a veterinary practice. This course will provide you with the skills to develop your career aspirations.

Academic and practical skills will be developed through several methods including formal lectures, guest speakers and research development tasks. You will have access to our animal care unit including the Blue Cross Cattery.

What will I do?

The Level 5 HND is a one year course. This is a standalone one year qualification, being a progression route from the Animal Management (Animal Behaviour and Welfare) HNC Level 4.

During the HND, you will cover the following units:

  • Biological Principles
  • Research Project
  • Anthrozoology
  • Evolutionary Adaptations
  • Animal Breeding and Genetics
  • Therapy and Rehabilitation
  • Wildlife Conservation

Successful completion of a Level 4 qualification in Animal Studies/Management is a requirement to study the Animal Management (Animal Behaviour and Welfare) HND Level 5 (Top-Up). You will also need a minimum of a grade 4 in GCSE maths, English and Science or its equivalent and the ability to demonstrate meaningful work experience.

Individual cases will be considered.

The course will take one year to complete. You will attend College two days a week, plus independent study.

There may also be one evening session - the day would start later than usual.

The Animal Management (Animal Behaviour and Welfare) HND Level 5 (Top-Up) course fee will be £7100.

Assessment is via course work which includes essays, reports, practical observations and presentations.

The assessment of Pearson's Higher National qualifications are criterion-referenced and you will provide evidence in the form of assignments, which are assessed against the unit learning outcomes and assessment criteria.

The Pearson HND courses are highly valued by employers and can lead to careers specialisms. Opportunities to top up a third year degree course is available depending on the offer of an external provider.

Additional costs include purchasing pens, paper, course specific materials and pay for educational and non-educational visits.

There are a number of educational visits arranged which you are encouraged to attend at a minimal cost, usually around £20.
