Course Summary

Why study GCSE English Language?
GCSE English Language is universally recognised as a qualification that helps you to take your next steps in education, or progress in your career, be that a promotion or career change. It might also be the course for you if you are curious about the way English works.

Is this the right course for me?
Although GCSE English is recognised by all employers and educational settings in the UK, it might not be the course for you. Functional Skills English at Level 2 can be completed in about half the time of a GCSE, depending on your starting point, and is recognised by most employers, educational settings and is part of most apprenticeship frameworks. A Functional Skills English or ESOL qualification might also be better for you if you are looking to develop your spelling, punctuation, grammar and spoken skills.

What else do I need to know?

GCSE English Language is designed to give you the skills to be able to take your next steps in your education or career. Or you might just enjoy studying how English works.

You will read and analyse: a variety of 19th Century non-fiction texts from newspapers and magazines of the time; modern literary non-fiction texts from biographies and autobiographies; and contemporary fiction.

You will also develop your transactional and imaginative writing skills.

GCSE English is a key qualification and is suitable for those learners who hold a grade 3 in their GCSE (Old GCSE Grade D) or ESOL learners who have achieved Functional Skills Level 2.

To study this course you will need to be able to cope with the regular commitment of a once a week class and capable of some independent study.

If you're an Adult learner you will need to undertake a test to check your ability.

GCSE English Language will take you one academic year to complete.

Initially, we recommend that you attend three sessions in person at our Boston Campus to familiarise yourself with how the course works. After this initial period, you will continue with weekly sessions, which can be attended either in person or online. Each week, you will engage with our course materials and participate in a session to discuss your learning and complete assessments to monitor your progress.

Please note sessions at Spalding or Horncastle will only run if there is sufficient demand. If these classes do not run, you can still join the Boston class either remotely or on site.

This course is free for those who do not currently hold a GCSE at grade A* - C (New GCSE grade 4 or above).

If you do not fall into any of these categories please contact us on 01205 313218 or email info@boston.ac.uk for more details.

Fees may vary depending on personal circumstances, please enquire for further information.

Please note that all fees are subject to change.

There are two written exams, which are usually held in the first and second weeks of June. You must be available to take these exams. The exams are split equally between reading and writing tasks.

You can achieve a grade 1-9, with a grade 4 being the grade that is required by employers or to progress in education.

Each exam lasts for 1 hour and 55 minutes and is worth 50% of the total marks available.

There is also a small Speaking and Listening element to the qualification. To achieve this, you will need to deliver a presentation lasting about five minutes on a topic of your choice.

GCSE English is a basic requirement for most areas of employment. It can assist you in securing employment within a number of sectors or can help lead to a variety of Further Education courses.
