Boston College Awarded £4.8 million to Transform Construction Training

Boston College has been awarded £4.8 million in Government funding to transform its construction facilities, creating modern learning environments that will train the next generation of plumbers, electricians and skilled tradespeople.

The investment is part of the Government's wider programme to build capacity in further education and ensure colleges have the space and resources needed to meet growing demand from both students and employers. 

The funding will support a major redevelopment of the College's construction department, creating modern, high-quality, flexible workshops that respond to immediate needs and prepare students for changing careers in the construction sector. The project includes development of the existing Rochford Campus, providing industry standard workshop space and dynamic teaching areas to create larger, more adaptable learning environments. 

Construction continues to be one of the College's fastest-growing curriculum areas, with demand for places increasing alongside the need for skilled workers across the region. The redevelopment aligns with the colleges ambition to expand construction provision in response to the needs of both students, employers and national skills needs.  

Lynette Leith OBE, Principal and CEO of Boston College, said “Over recent years our construction department has grown significantly – this important investment allows us to bring our existing estate up to date, build capacity for trades in the build environment, and develop future ready training facilities that prioritise modern methods of construction for the local, regional and national economy.” 

David Wright, new Chair of Governors at Boston College, said, “this is an endorsement of our continued investment in the community and students we serve on a local and regional basis and testimony to our strategic commitment in future skills development at the college” 

Work is expected to begin in January 2027, with the new facilities due to open in January 2028. The project is another important investment in Boston College's estate, building on the College's strong relationships with employers.
