This course combines a basic introduction to small animal care and horticulture with work experience. You will study many areas including: small animal health check, assist with feeding a small animals, groom a small animal, assist with the care of animals, assist with preparation of plants, developing practical skills for maintaining plants, introduction to ground preparation, assist with propagation of plants, prepare and plant a container, preparation for work, plan and participate in an event, career progression, working as a part of a group and welcoming visitors.
This course will help you to gain the skills you need to work in small animal care and horticulture areas.
As a RSW small animal and horticulture learner you will have access to our green house facilities, vegetable patch, poly tunnel and on site bespoke animal care unit.
What will I do?
This course will give you an overview of the tasks involved with the care of small animals, moving animals, feeding and watering, cleaning and preparing accommodation for the animals and an opportunity to work in horticulture industry. You may also get an opportunity to visit local and regional businesses to observe and gain experience in the industry.
Guest speakers from industry may also come and speak to you to give you an insight into the different jobs and careers you could progress to.
You will study the Level 1 BTEC Diploma in Vocational Studies and be encouraged to develop your employability skills including time management, communication skills, research skills and teamwork. As a part of the course you will gain a valuable work experience which will be arranged by the College.
There are no formal entry qualifications for this course.
This course is free for those who are under 19 on 31 August of the year they start their course.
For those aged 19+, this course will cost £1200.

This course will take you 1 year to complete. You will study at both the College for 3-4 days a week, plus work experience.
