The Apprenticeship Standard Retail Motor Vehicle Service and Maintenance – Light Vehicle Apprenticeship is a nationally recognised course involving the use of advanced automotive techniques and training, offering you the opportunity to gain hands on industry experience.

Employers within the Automotive Retail industry have designed the new approved Apprenticeship Standard for technicians who service and repair light vehicle.

This Apprenticeship is suitable if you service and repair light vehicles and work in either a dealership that focuses on a particular manufacturer, or an independent garage that deals with many different makes of vehicles. With the nature of the work ranging from replacing simple parts through to solving complex faults with the use of diagnostic methods and equipment.

What will I do?

The Apprenticeship consists of several elements, which have been identified by employers as an appropriate set of skills to operate in their chosen job role.

These elements are:
Maths - Level 1 or Level 2 Functional Skills, unless an equivalent qualification has already been achieved.

English - Level 1 or Level 2 Functional Skills, unless an equivalent qualification has already been achieved.

Vocational Element (Knowledge) - most Apprenticeship include off-the-job study for a technical certificate which is usually done at College.

Vocational Element (Competence) - all Apprenticeships include on-the-job training and assessment leading to a competence based vocational qualification.

On some Apprenticeships, the knowledge and competence elements are combined into one qualification.

The entry qualifications for the Standard Retail Motor Vehicle Service and Maintenance – Light Vehicle Apprenticeship are three GCSEs at grades D or above (New GCSE grade 3 or above) including Maths and English (or equivalent).

You will also need relevant industry employment.

The Retail Motor Vehicle Service and Maintenance – Light Vehicle Apprenticeship will take you three years to complete. You will study at College for one day a week, and four days with your employer.

You will be expected to have a minimum attendance rate of 90%

Learners who have completed an Automotive Technologies (Motor Vehicle) Autocare Technician Apprenticeship can complete this course in 2 years as opposed to the 3 years it would usually take.

As an Apprentice, you will pay no course fees. However, your employer may have to pay towards your training as well as providing you with a wage (please see below).

There are different rates of pay for apprentices depending on your age and what year of your apprenticeship you’re in.

Aged 16 to 18.

The current National Minimum Wage rate for an apprentice is Β£5.28 per hour.

Aged 19 or over and in your first year.

The current National Minimum Wage rate for an apprentice is Β£5.28 per hour.

Aged 19 or over and have completed your first year.

You’re entitled to the National Minimum Wage or National Living Wage rate for your age.

Successful completion of each unit is achieved by passing online exams or practical assessments.

These assessments are deigned to review your behaviour, knowledge and skills against set gateway criteria.

In addition, you are also required to maintain an E-Log book evidencing progress over the duration of the Apprenticeship.

The Apprenticeship consists of several elements, which have been identified by employers as an appropriate set of skills to operate in their chosen job role.

Additional costs include educational materials (pens, folders, text books etc.) and financial contribution towards the cost of educational visits.
