Public Services BSc (Hons) Top Up Level 6 is designed to provide you with the knowledge and understanding needed to succeed in various Public Services roles. Upon completing the course, you will have an enhanced understanding of psychological and sociological theories that explain criminal behaviour, including individual influences and socio-economic factors. You will also gain deeper knowledge of different perspectives on intimate partner abuse, its impact on victims, and the responses of relevant agencies to such incidents.

This course aims to prepare you for professional roles in public services, such as law enforcement, social work, victim support, and community outreach, by fostering your skills in critical thinking, ethical reasoning, and effective communication.

By engaging in a range of assessment methods, such as critical reflections, presentations, scenario-based observations, and reports, you will develop a greater critical perspective on various Public Sector roles, opening up extensive opportunities for future employment.

What will I do?

Throughout the Public Services BSc (Hons) Top Up, you will engage in a range of topics designed to enhance your knowledge and skills in public services. You will complete the following units, totalling 120 credits:

Semester 1:

  • Managing Services: Develop the skills needed to effectively manage and lead within public service organizations
  • Psychological Perspectives of Serious and Dangerous Offenders: Explore the psychological factors that influence criminal behaviour in serious and high-risk offenders

Semester 2:

  • Counselling Perspectives: Gain insight into key counselling theories and practices, relevant to public services roles
  • Psychology of Intimate Partner Abuse: Study the psychological underpinnings of intimate partner abuse and the impact on victims and communities

Year Long:

  • Dissertation: Independent Study Project: Conduct an in-depth research project on a topic of your choice, allowing you to apply the knowledge gained throughout the course

This structure will provide you with a comprehensive understanding of both theoretical and practical aspects of public services, preparing you for future professional roles.

To gain entry on to the Public Services BSc (Hons) Top Up Level 6 you will need to have achieved at least a Merit profile in the Level 5 HND in Public Services course. Other entry qualifications may also be accepted on a case-by-case basis upon successful approval by the University of Derby. Other qualifications that could be accepted are Level 5 Diploma in Psychology with at least 240 Credits.

You must also have achieved a Level 2 qualification or above in English and Maths (e.g. GCSE or Functional Skills Level 2).

This course will take you up to one year to complete, with the course planned across 30 weeks. You will attend College every Wednesday from 9:00pm - 4:00pm over at BCUC on our Rochford Campus in Boston.

Alongside your face-to-face study days it is expected that students commit to undertaking their own wider reading to support their understanding during the duration of the course.

The BSc (Hons) Public Services (Top Up) will cost Β£7600.

You can apply for a student loan to cover the costs of course fees. You may also be able to apply for various grants and loans to support your learning. Specific advice regarding student loans and other benefits can be obtained from www.gov.uk/student-finance.

Please note that all fees are subject to an annual review.

You will be assessed through a variety of methods designed to develop your critical thinking and practical skills. These include:

  • Critical reflections on key topics and real-world issues
  • Presentations to demonstrate your understanding and communication abilities
  • Scenario-based observations to assess your practical application of knowledge
  • Reports that showcase your analytical and research skills

These diverse assessment methods will help you gain a well-rounded perspective on public sector roles and prepare you for future employment opportunities.

Upon completing the Public Services BSc (Hons) Top Up, you may pursue a variety of career opportunities in both Uniformed and Non-Uniformed Public Services. Potential roles include:

  • Positions within Local or County Councils
  • Wellbeing Officer roles
  • Opportunities within the Police or Justice System
  • Roles in supportive local agencies

With the knowledge and transferable skills gained from this course, you will be well-equipped to explore different career paths in the public services sector. Keep in mind that some roles may require a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check, though this is not necessary for all positions.
