The Art and Design Diploma Level 2 is aimed at those who are passionate about Art and Design. This course will help you develop your practical skills in many areas including: fine art, painting, sculpture, metalwork, print, plaster, photography, 3D designs, graphic design and 4D time-based media. You will be introduced to each area and process and be encouraged to experiment.

As an Art and Design student, you will have access to all our Art, Design and Media facilities, which include two art studios, ceramics and pottery studio (including kiln), photography studio and darkroom, two iMac editing suites, and a television studio. You will also be using industry standard software.

What will I do?

During this course, you will study 4 different units covering the different art practices such as: fine art, painting, sculpture, ceramics, metalwork, print, plaster, photography, 3D design and graphic design.

This course is delivered in a practical way, but there is a requirement for some written work and research in order to achieve this qualification.

You will also take part in work experience with local employers to give you real world experienced that relates to the Creative Arts sector. You will be supported in identifying organisations for your placements, or you can generate these from your own contacts.

If you have a Grade 2 or below in English or Maths, you can study towards either a PASS in Functional Skills Level 2 or a GCSE grade 4-9. Once you have achieved either qualification, you will not be required to undertake any further English or Maths. Full time 16-19 students with a Grade 3, must study towards a GCSE grade 4-9.

To study the Art and Design Diploma Level 2, you will need to have:

    4 GCSEs at grades 1 or above (Old GCSE grade G or above) or equivalent including English and Maths
  • A portfolio of work for review if you are invited for an interview

If you do not have a portfolio of work to bring to the interview, you may be set a task to complete within 2 weeks as a condition to enrolment.

The Art and Design Diploma Level 2 will take you 1 year to complete. You will attend college at our Boston (Rochford) Campus for a minimum of 3-4 days per week, 9:00am-4:30pm, plus independent study.

The Art and Design Diploma Level 2 is free for those who are under 19 on 31 August of the year they start their course.

If you are aged 19+, this course will cost £1500.

You will be assessed through practical tasks (70%), including group work, work-based evidence, coursework, presentations and performances, alongside theory (30%) to give you a broad grounding in Art and Design.

Successful completion of this course to a MP level would allow you to progress to a Level 3 qualification in Art and Design, Graphic and Digital Design, Photography or Media.

Should you decide to enter the world of employment, this course is the equivalent of 4 GCSE’s at grade 9-4.

Additional costs educational visits and/or workshops, which cost approximately £30 per year. You will also be expected to provide your own art and design materials, including paints, sketchbooks and printing costs.
