What will I do?

During this course, you will explore a variety of topics, including:
  • Introduction to Pet Care
  • Introduction to Exotic Animals
  • Exploring Opportunities in Animal Care
  • Assisting with Preparing and Storing Feed for Small Animals
  • Assisting with the Care of Animals
  • Assisting with the Maintenance and Cleaning of Animal Accommodation

There are no formal entry requirements for this course.

The Practical Animal Care Skills Award Level 1 will take you 6 weeks to complete starting on Wednesday 14th January 2026. You will attend college from 5:00pm-8:00pm for 1 evening per week (Wednesdays) at our Rochford Campus in Boston.

This course may be fully funded by the Adult Education Budget should you be eligible under the following criteria:

  • Be aged 19+ on the 31st August at the start of the current academic year
  • Be either unemployed and receiving JSA, ESA or Universal Credit (subject to criteria) OR be earning less than £25,000 (annual gross salary) a year

If you do not qualify for the Adult Educational Budget, this course will cost £129.

Please note that all fees are subject to change.

You will be assessed via practical observations and written tasks.

Successful completion of the Animal Studies Certificate Level 1 opens doors to further education and career opportunities in the animal care sector. Students who achieve this qualification can progress onto Level 2 Animal Management courses, where they will expand their knowledge and practical skills.
