Practical Animal Care Skills Award Level 1

What will I do?
During this course, you will explore a variety of topics, including:
- Introduction to Pet Care
- Introduction to Exotic Animals
- Exploring Opportunities in Animal Care
- Assisting with Preparing and Storing Feed for Small Animals
- Assisting with the Care of Animals
- Assisting with the Maintenance and Cleaning of Animal Accommodation
Entry Qualifications
There are no formal entry requirements for this course.
Attendance
The Practical Animal Care Skills Award Level 1 will take you 6 weeks to complete starting on Wednesday 14th January 2026. You will attend college from 5:00pm-8:00pm for 1 evening per week (Wednesdays) at our Rochford Campus in Boston.
Fees
This course may be fully funded by the Adult Education Budget should you be eligible under the following criteria:
- Be aged 19+ on the 31st August at the start of the current academic year
- Be either unemployed and receiving JSA, ESA or Universal Credit (subject to criteria) OR be earning less than £25,000 (annual gross salary) a year
If you do not qualify for the Adult Educational Budget, this course will cost £129.
Please note that all fees are subject to change.
How Will I Be Assessed
You will be assessed via practical observations and written tasks.
Where Could It Lead?
Successful completion of the Animal Studies Certificate Level 1 opens doors to further education and career opportunities in the animal care sector. Students who achieve this qualification can progress onto Level 2 Animal Management courses, where they will expand their knowledge and practical skills.
