Dive into the world of garden horticulture with the Level 1 Award in Exploring Occupational Studies for the Workplace. This course is designed to introduce you to fundamental horticultural skills and techniques, such as developing essential garden care abilities, mastering sowing and growing techniques, cultivating nutrient-rich compost and soils, and exploring the versatile world of herb cultivation. Whether you're looking to explore new career opportunities or expand your practical skill set, you will benefit from dynamic, hands-on learning that brings the theory of horticulture to life.

What will I do?

During this course, you will explore a variety of topics, including:

  • Developing Skills in Garden Horticulture: Build a strong foundation in garden care, from understanding plant needs to mastering the essentials of garden planning and maintenance. This module will help you develop the practical skills needed to manage and beautify outdoor spaces
  • Sowing and Growing Techniques: Learn the art and science of sowing seeds and nurturing plants to maturity. This module covers a range of techniques to ensure successful growth and development, giving you the confidence to cultivate a variety of plants
  • Cultivating Compost and Soils: Discover the importance of healthy soil and nutrient-rich compost. In this module, you will explore sustainable practices that improve soil quality and support robust plant growth, a key element in any thriving garden
  • Cultivating Herbs: Delve into the world of herbs, learning how to cultivate, care for, and utilize these versatile plants. This module not only focuses on growing herbs but also explores their uses in cooking, medicine, and beyond

There are no formal entry requirements for this course.

The Land Based Studies Award Level 1 will take you 11 weeks to complete starting on Wednesday 4th March 2026. You will attend college from 5:00pm-8:00pm for 1 evening per week (Wednesdays) at our Rochford Campus in Boston.

This course may be fully funded by the Adult Education Budget should you be eligible under the following criteria:

  • Be aged 19+ on the 31st August at the start of the current academic year
  • Be either unemployed and receiving JSA, ESA or Universal Credit (subject to criteria) OR be earning less than Β£25,000 (annual gross salary) a year

If you do not qualify for the Adult Educational Budget, this course will cost Β£129.

Please note that all fees are subject to change.

You will be assessed via practical observations and written tasks.

Successful completion of the Land Based Studies Award Level 1 opens doors to further education and career opportunities in the animal care sector. Students who achieve this qualification can progress onto other Animal Management courses, where they will expand their knowledge and practical skills.
