The structure of the NCFE Level 2 Entry to the Uniformed Services Diploma provides an innovative and creative curriculum which combines classroom study with practical outdoor activities. The aim of this qualification is to allow learners to gain transferable skills that can be applied to the workplace or further study. Boston College work in conjunction with Lincolnshire Police and other public service organisations to ensure students gain a realistic learning experience.

This an exciting one-year course, in which you will develop the skills, knowledge and behaviours from expert staff from public service and industry backgrounds. During the year, you will be exposed to many elements of the Uniformed Public Services to give you a real perspective of jobs and careers within this exciting employment opportunity. On successful completion you can then progress onto our level 3 offer or employment within your chosen public service. There will be a clear set of values that allow an understanding of the public services and the community, promoting curiosity, independence, resilience and self-awareness.

All teaching staff have the experience and the knowledge of working within the public services. The department work in conjunction with many organisations including Lincolnshire Police, RAF, Royal Navy and The British Army. Modules will be a mixture of theory and practical which are carefully chosen to ensure progression.

What will I do?

The Level 2 Entry to the Uniformed Public Services Diploma is made up of several units including:

Mandatory Units:

  • Investigate Employment in the Uniformed Services
  • Physical Fitness for the Uniformed Services
  • Develop Team Working and Problem-Solving Skills
  • Health and Safety in the Uniformed Services
  • Health and Hygiene in the Uniformed Services
  • Follow Uniformed Service Routine
  • Exploring Equality and Diversity for the Uniformed Services

Optional units

  • Carry Out Map Reading and Navigation
  • Undertake Adventurous Activities
  • Participate in Competitive Sports
  • Explore the Use of Telecommunication in the Uniformed Services
  • Explore Volunteering and Volunteering Opportunities

In addition to your course, you will also study either Functional Skills or GCSE English and Maths,( dependent on your current GCSE grade )You will also take part in ‘meaningful work experience’ which is designed to develop your interpersonal skills, therefore, enhancing your employment prospects.

The desirable entry qualifications for Level 2 Diploma for Entry to the Uniformed Services course are four GCSEs which will include a grade 3 in English Language.

Level 2 Functional Skills in English and maths or a Pass/Merit profile in a course related subject will also be considered. Suitability to this course can also be assessed on interview.

The Level 2 Entry to the Uniformed Services Diploma will take you one year to complete. You will attend College for 3-4 days a week, plus independent study.

The Uniformed Public Services Diploma is free, if you are under the age of 19 on 31 August of the year you start the course.

If you are aged 19+, this course will cost £1500.

Please note that all fees are subject to change.

You will be assessed using a variety of different methods, which include observation, written assessments, presentations, academic posters and professional discussions with tutor. All units are internally assessed and graded at Pass, Merit or Distinction.

Successful completion of the Level 2 Diploma to a merit or distinction standard along with a good attendance record and positive reference from your tutor, could lead to progression onto a Level 3 course.

Students may also progress to employment within the Emergency Services, Armed Forces and the Security Industry.

The wearing of a uniform is mandatory. – approximate cost £50.

Learners may be subject to a yearly fee of up to £100 to cover the cost of any outdoor adventurous activities and residential trips.
