The Certificate in Education (Cert Ed) Post 14 Further Education and Skills is a programme suitable for vocationally qualified professionals seeking to become fully qualified teachers of learners aged 14 and above in the post-14 sector and other educational settings.

What will I do?

Throughout the Certificate in Education (Cert Ed) Post 14 Further Education and Skills you will study six 20-credit modules over the duration of the programme, forming an overall 120 credit award.

These modules are -

  • Introduction to the FE Teaching Role (20 credits)
  • Professional Practice 1 (20 credits)
  • Learning Theories Applied (20 credits)
  • Teaching Practice 2 (20 credits)
  • The Curriculum Explored (20 credits)
  • Investigating Subject Pedagogy (20 credits)

The overall purpose of the Certificate in Education Post 14 Further Education and Skills (FES) programme is to develop outstanding teachers for all parts of the FES sector, primarily but not exclusively in settings where students are aged 14 and above. The majority of FES teachers work in FE colleges (whether general or specialist), independent training providers (ITPs), Adult Community Learning (ACL) providers, or offender learning.

The entry requirements for the Certificate in Education (Cert Ed) Post 14 Further Education and Skills is a Level 3 qualification or equivalent in the subject, or a related subject, that you plan on teaching. You will also need to possess a minimum of Level 2 in English and maths, which is recognised by the Society for Education and Training’s (SET) list of approved qualifications for QTLS.

You must also have at least 75 hours of teaching across each year and be supported by a mentor.

Volunteering can only count if it is in Boston College and all other requirements are met such as being supported by a mentor and that the volunteering runs across the whole year.

All applications are subject to approval by the University of Derby (UoD). In order for the University to approve your application we are required to share your personal information. This includes sharing the application form that you have completed to study this course, and in some instances, copies of your maths, English and highest-level qualification certificate.

The Certificate in Education (Cert Ed) Post 14 Further Education and Skills will take you two years to complete.

The Certificate in Education (Cert Ed) Post 14 Further Education and Skills will cost you £3460, you may be eligible to apply to Student Finance England to cover your Tuition fees.

During the Certificate in Education (Cert Ed) Post 14 Further Education and Skills each module will be assessed on 50% practical and 50% theory.

The majority of trainees completing programmes are successfully appointed to teaching posts across the sector. Many trainees move on quickly to become course leaders/managers of the subject area.

Upon completion of the Certificate in Education you can progress onto the PGCE from which you will be eligible to apply for Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills status via the Society for Education and Training.
