If you are passionate about music and enjoy working in a creative, exciting environment, then this is the course for you. The music course is for musicians, performers and songwriters who want to take their music to the next level.
You will work within our fully equipped, dedicated music campus where you will develop personalised projects relating to performance and production. The course, delivered by our experienced lecturers, covers performing, recording, song writing, music business and theory to give an overview of the music industry and how to succeed as a musician or performer.
The emphasis of the course is on creating entrepreneurial musicians who have the skills, knowledge and experience to promote themselves and their music. This is achieved through practical application of knowledge in realistic industry environments such as projects, workshops and performances, and by enabling learners to create and promote a portfolio of their own work. You will be required to work on 'real world' projects, giving you the opportunity to perform to the public and submit songs to our record label.
This course will help learners gain the skills to progress into work or Higher Education and achieve their future goals.
You will study units covering skills relating to performance, production, event management and creative business.
Practical work, performances and portfolio building make up a large part of the music course.
Practical work – The application of your learning in a practical setting is an important part of the course. You will take part in the planning and organisation of events, workshops, presentations and projects. You will also have the opportunity to utilise the Sam Newsom Music Centre’s excellent studio facilities to create professional quality recordings.
Performances – Working on your performance skills and applying them at performances will make up a large part of the course. You will have the opportunity to play with many other musicians in a variety of venues and contexts and gain first-hand experience of performing. You will also have the opportunity to organise and run your own events.
Portfolio – Throughout the course you will build a professional portfolio which represents you and your work. This portfolio will be used to assess your work but, more than that, will give you a foundation on which you can promote yourself during and after your course is completed.
As well as performance and recording techniques, you will explore areas of music such as composition, improvisation, listening skills and music business and promotion.
You'll learn in our dedicated and specialist Sam Newsom Music Centre where Performance facilities include a large auditorium, six rehearsal rooms and three DJ studios. We also have music technology suites and recording studios which are all equipped with the latest VST instruments and samplers.
In addition to your course, you may also study either Functional Skills or GCSE English and Maths, dependent on your current GCSE grade.
The entry qualifications for the Level 3 Music Extended Diploma are five GCSEs at grade 4 or above (Old GCSE grade C or above) or equivalent, including maths or English, or Merit or above at Diploma Level 2.
