The Level 2 Music Diploma is for you if you are passionate about music and enjoy working in a creative, exciting environment. The course has pathways in singing, band performance and music technology (including DJing) and you will have the opportunity to perform in several performances throughout the year.

You will study within our fully equipped, dedicated music campus, Sam Newsom Music Centre, where you will develop personalised projects relating to performance and production. You will be encouraged to work on 'real world' projects, giving you the opportunity to perform to the public and submit songs to the programmes record label. You will learn how to compose, produce, perform, manage events, develop yourself as an artist and understand the business side of the industry.

The course creates an environment where you are encouraged to explore your personal goals supported by our team of lecturers who have long standing professional experience and are still actively involved in the music business outside of the College.

This qualification will allow you to progress to a Level 3 course upon successful completion.

What will I do?

You will study six different units covering skills relating to performance, production, event management and creative business.

You will learn in our dedicated and specialist Sam Newsom Music Centre where facilities include a music technology suite, recording studios, equipped with the latest VST instruments and samplers. Performance facilities include a large auditorium, six rehearsal rooms and three DJ studios.

There will be opportunities to gain work experience through the implementation of 'Live Briefs’, which allow you to engage with the local business community and work on 'Real World' projects.

Your course will also include opportunities to take part in a variety of trips.

We also arrange workshops and invite guest speakers including Creative Practitioners who are working in the industry to talk to you and give you advice about your career.

If you have a Grade 2 or below in English or maths, you can study towards either a PASS in Functional Skills Level 2 or a GCSE grade 4-9. Once you have achieved either qualification, you will not be required to undertake any further English or maths.

Full time 16-19 learner with a Grade 3, must study towards a GCSE grade 4-9.

The entry qualifications for the Level 2 Music Diploma are four GCSEs at grades 1 or above (Old GCSE grade G or above) (or equivalent). An audition to demonstrate musical or technical ability will also be required. When you attend your review, an audition to demonstrate musical ability will also be required., this can be instrumental, vocal or DJing.

If you do not meet the entry requirements or are unsure which of the creative arts you would like to study, the Level 1 Exploring the Creative Arts Extended Certificate could be for you.

The Music Diploma will take you one year to complete. You will attend Boston College’s Sam Newsom Music Centre for four days a week, plus three hours a week of independent study.
