This Level 3 Motor Vehicle Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair IMI Diploma builds on the Level 2 Motor Vehicle Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair IMI Diploma and equips you with the knowledge of diagnostic procedures for modern vehicles.

What will I do?

The Level 3 Motor Vehicle Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair IMI Diploma is delivered theory and practical workshops, covering health, safety and good housekeeping, job roles within the automotive industry, materials and fabrication and vehicle system operation diagnostics in the following subjects:

  • Light vehicle Engines
  • Light vehicle chassis systems
  • Light vehicle transmission and driveline systems
  • Light vehicle auxiliary electrical systems
  • Light vehicle engine overhauls

Delivery of the qualification is supplemented by visits to major industry manufacturers, museums and shows, this helps broaden your perspective of progression opportunities following successful completion of the course.

In addition to your main course you will also study:

  • Award in Hybrid/Electric Vehicle Technology

The course is a great mix of both theory and practical, allowing you time in our workshops and classrooms to experience the world of Engineering. You will also develop your skills for employment, looking at different careers and engineering employers.

In addition to your course, you may also need to study either Functional Skills or GCSE English and Maths, dependent on your GCSE grades.

The entry qualifications for the Level 3 Motor Vehicle Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair IMI Diploma are completion of a Level 2 Motor Vehicle course (or equivalent) and GCSE Grade 4 or above in Maths and English.

The Motor Vehicle Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair IMI Diploma will take you one year to complete. You will attend College for a minimum of three days a week.

The Motor Vehicle Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair IMI Diploma is free, if you are under the age of 19 on 31 August of the year you start the course.

Aged 19+.

For those aged 19+, this course will cost £5421.

You may be eligible to study this course for FREE should you be eligible under one of the following criteria:

  • Aged 19 or over, and earning less than £20,319
  • Aged 19 or over, and currently unemployed and receiving JSA, ESA or Universal Credit
  • Aged 19 or over and do not currently hold a Level 3 qualification

Alternatively, you may qualify for an Advanced Learner Loan to help with your College fees. If you progress to employment you won't have to pay anything back until you’re earning £25,000 per year. Your household income isn't taken into account and there's no credit check. Your eligibility depends on your course, nationality, and age. Successful completion of each unit is achieved by online exams and practical competency assessments.

Successful completion of the Level 3 Motor Vehicle Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair IMI Diploma allows you to apply for an automotive apprenticeship or continue your studies at university.

Additional costs include purchasing corporate work wear, which includes polo shirts, overalls and safety footwear.

There may be an opportunity to complete an Industry Placement alongside your main Level 3 course.

Industry placements give you the chance to put into practice what you have learned and you will have the opportunity to spend an average of 50 days working for an employer, in a role directly relevant to your course.

With an Industry Placement you will gain technical skills, be prepared for the world of work, and gain connections in order to secure a job after your course.

  • Give yourself a head start in knowing what type of job you may want to go into after finishing your course.

What will I do?

  • You will take part in an average of 50 days placement in a role that is directly relevant to your course, in an external organisation.
  • You will develop the practical and technical skills required for your profession/trade.
  • You will develop employability skills such as communication, teamwork and time management.

An existing part time job may qualify as an Industry Placement if it meets the criteria set by the College.
