The Level 1 Automotive Maintenance Diploma helps to build and equip you with the knowledge of basic vehicle systems for a modern motor vehicle. Our workshops are available to give you the opportunity to gain hands on realistic and practical experience on a selection of specialist training rigs and vehicles.

What will I do?

The Level 1 Motor Vehicle (Automotive Technologies) Diploma is delivered in theory and practical workshops, covering health and safety, good housekeeping, job roles within the automotive industry and materials and fabrication. As well as the mandatory unit in Health and Safety, other units may include:

  • Engineering equipment and materials
  • Compression ignition power units
  • Spark ignition power units
  • Liquid cooling and engine lubricants
  • Transmission systems
  • Steering and suspension

Delivery of the qualification is supplemented by visits to museums and shows, this helps broaden your perspective of progression opportunities following successful completion of the course.

The course is a great mix of both theory and practical, allowing you time in our workshops and classrooms to experience the world of Engineering. You will also develop your skills for employment, looking at different careers and engineering employers.

In addition to your course, you may also need to study either Functional Skills or GCSE English and Maths, dependent on your GCSE grades.

Entry requirements are two GCSEs at grades 2 or above (Old GCSE grade E or above) or equivalent (to include English or maths), or any one of the following, an Entry 3 qualification, a Certificate in Skills for Working Life or Life Skills, an ESOL Entry L3 qualification.

The Level 1 Motor Vehicle (Automotive Technologies) Diploma will take you one year to complete. You will attend College for at least three days a week.

The Level 1 Motor Vehicle (Automotive Technologies) Diploma is free, if you are under the age of 19 on 31 August of the year you start the course.

If you are aged 19+, this course will cost Β£1500.

Successful completion of each unit is achieved by passing online exams and practical competency assessments.

Successful completion of the Level 1 Motor Vehicle (Automotive Technologies) Diploma allows you to apply for an automotive Apprenticeship or continue your studies on the Level 2 Motor Vehicle Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair IMI Diploma.

Specific Progression routes – FE, Apprenticeship, Employment.

Additional costs include purchasing corporate work wear, which includes polo shirts, overalls and safety footwear.
