This Autocare Technician Apprenticeship is a nationally recognised apprenticeship, which provides you with the opportunity to gain hands on industry experience whilst building your knowledge within the College environment.

Employers within the Automotive Retail industry have designed the new approved Apprenticeship Standard for technicians who service and repair light vehicles.

This apprenticeships is suitable if you service and repair light vehicles and work in either a dealership that focuses on a manufacturer, or an independent garage that deals with many different makes of vehicles.

What will I do?

The Autocare Technician Apprenticeships is delivered by both theory and practical workshops, covering the following subjects:

  • Foundation Skills
  • Customer Service, Sales and Stock Management
  • Vehicle Inspection
  • Electrical and Hybrid Awareness
  • Wheels and Tyres
  • Braking Systems
  • Steering and Suspension
  • Cooling and Lubrication
  • Starting and Charging
  • Exhaust and Emissions
  • Air Conditioning

In addition to your course, you may also study either Functional Skills or GCSE English and Maths, dependent on your current GCSE grade.

The entry qualifications for the Autocare Technician Apprenticeship are three GCSEs at grades 2 or above (Old GCSE grade E or above) including Maths and English (or equivalent).

You will also need relevant industry employment.

The Autocare Technician Apprenticeship will take you 30 months to complete. You will study at College for one day a week, and four days with your employer.

You will be expected to have a minimum attendance rate of 95%.

As an Apprentice, you will pay no course fees. However, your employer may have to pay towards your training as well as providing you with a wage (please see below).

There are different rates of pay for apprentices depending on your age and what year of your apprenticeship you’re in.

Aged 16 to 18.

The current National Minimum Wage rate for an apprentice is £5.28 per hour.

Aged 19 or over and in your first year.

The current National Minimum Wage rate for an apprentice is £5.28 per hour.

Aged 19 or over and have completed your first year.

You’re entitled to the National Minimum Wage or National Living Wage rate for your age.

Successful completion of each unit is achieved by passing online exams or practical assessments.

These assessments are designed to review your behaviour, knowledge and skills against set gateway criteria.

In addition, you are also required to maintain an E-Log book evidencing progress over the duration of the apprenticeship.

This could support entry onto Level 3 Apprenticeship or directly into employment.

Additional costs include educational materials (pens, folders, textbooks etc.) and financial contribution towards the cost of educational visits.
