Throughout the Level 2 Barbering Certificate, learners will develop their knowledge and understanding of relevant anatomy and physiology and health and safety. They will also develop the knowledge, understanding and skills to advise and consult, and provide a range of cutting and barbering services specifically for men's hair, which includes shaving and creating facial hair shapes.

In parallel, learners will develop their communication and customer service skills, their awareness of environmental sustainability and their commercial skills, all of which are valued highly by employers. Problem solving and research skills will also be developed.

Learners who achieve this qualification are eligible to become a State Registered Graduate Barber (SRGB) with The Hair Council and join the British Barbers' Association. As a junior barber, learners could progress directly into employment in a variety of contexts, which include:

  • Commercial barber shops or salons
  • Specialist African type barber shops/salons
  • Independent/self-employed/mobile/home-based settings
  • Television, film, theatre and media
  • Armed services
  • HM prison service
  • Cruise liners
  • Hospitals/care homes

Whilst the primary purpose of this qualification is to prepare learners for employment, learners may choose to develop their knowledge and skills further by completing an advanced apprenticeship or Level 3 qualification in barbering, these include:

  • VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Barbering
  • VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Barbering Studies
  • VTCT NVQ Level 3 Diploma in Barbering

What will I do?

The VTCT Level 2 Certificate in Barbering is a qualification that has been specifically designed to develop your practical skills in; the creative art of cutting men’s hair, the specialist work of cutting facial hair and how to offer a good consultation service for clients.

Underpinning this qualification you will develop a sound knowledge of health and safety whilst working in the barbering industry. You will also develop a knowledge and understanding of the practical skills learned throughout this qualification.

The purpose of this qualification is to develop your practical skills to a high level of occupational ability to enable you to perform your own salon services.

Units performed:

  • Client consultation for hair services
  • Follow health and safety practice in the salon
  • Cut men's hair
  • Cut facial hair

Entry requirements are two GCSEs at grade 2 or above (Old GCSE grade E or above) or equivalent (to include English or maths), or any one of the following, an Entry 3 qualification, a Certificate in Skills for Working Life or Life Skills, an ESOL Entry L3 qualification.

The Barbering Certificate will take you 19 weeks to complete, you will attend college one evening per week.

The Barbering Certificate is available to those aged 19+ and will cost £541.00.

This course will be assessed through practical demonstration, assignments and external end of unit papers.

Completion of this course can lead onto a Level 3 course in Hairdressing

Additional costs include a barbering kit at approximately £100
