Welcome to Vocational Skills, a comprehensive course designed to equip you with essential knowledge and skills for independent and effective operation in life, learning, and future professional endeavours. This course fosters personal growth, social development, and vocational competence, ensuring you are well-prepared for the demands of both the workplace and everyday life.

Throughout the course, you will engage in a variety of vocational sessions conducted in realistic working environments. These sessions focus on health and safety, teamwork, interview skills, preparing for work, and professional conduct. Each vocational area is studied intensively over six weeks, allowing you to gain hands-on experience and practical knowledge in multiple fields.

The vocational disciplines covered include:

  • Catering and Hospitality
  • Small Animal Care
  • Art and Design
  • Health and Social Care
  • Horticulture
  • Retail

In addition to vocational training, the course emphasizes skills for indpendence to support personal, social and emotional development. You will learn practical skills such as budgeting, household management, personal health and well-being, and effective communication.

Functional Skills English and Maths are also studied as part of this course.

What will I do?

In the Progression Skills course, you will engage in various vocational sessions through a dynamic carousel of learning experiences. These sessions, conducted in realistic environments, provide hands-on, practical knowledge and skills relevant to various fields.

This comprehensive approach ensures you gain valuable, real-world skills while advancing your English and Maths proficiency to support your future career and educational goals.

There are no specific entry requirements for Vocational Skills because each application will be assessed individually.

Maths and English will be assessed via initial assessments and prior achievement.

Vocational Skills will take you 1 year to complete. You will attend college at our Jean Ingelow Centre in Boston for 3 days per week.

15 hours of work experience will be undertaken on an extra day over a three week period.

Vocational Skills is free for those who are under 19 on 31 August of the year they start their course and those aged 19+ and on an EHCP.

You will take part in a range of activities and there will be written elements that are completed via a portfoilio of work.

The Vocational Skills course can open up several pathways for your future. You can move from Entry 3 to Level 1 courses at the college, giving you more opportunities to specialize in areas that interest you.
