The Children and Young People (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities SEND) FdA Level 5 is awarded by the University of Derby and has been developed with sector employers and designed to help you to develop skills and knowledge to support children and young people with SEND. All of the modules will directly relate to your working environment to help you to evaluate and understand practice in more depth.

Throughout this course, you will develop a critical understanding about policy and practice for SEND and your own role and ongoing professional development. You will will develop your confidence and knowledge for being a highly effective practitioner. Your academic study will be reflected in your practical work, and your working environment will be used for projects, activities and research. The qualification has an emphasis on employability and transferable skills, and your learning will be relevant to your everyday practice.

As a University of Derby partner student, you will have access to the university’s virtual learning environment, including University of Derby Online (UDO) and online journals and texts, as well as library facilities.

What will I do?

During your two years studying the Children and Young People (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities SEND) FdA Level 5, you will cover a variety of modules.

  • Work Based Reflective Practice
  • International Professional Working with Children and Young People
  • Introduction to SEND
  • The Curriculum 0-25
  • Research Methods and Practice
  • Secondary Research
  • Supporting Learners with SEND
  • International Perspectives in Provision and Practice: Working with Children and Young People
  • Children Young People’s Family Rights
  • Understanding and Managing Speech, Language and Communication Difficulties

Applicants must be aged 18 or over and working directly with children or young people aged 0-25 years in a voluntary or paid capacity for a minimum of two days a week.

In order to study the Children and Young People (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities SEND) FdA Level 5, you will need to have successfully completed one of the following:

  • NVQ 3
  • A Levels
  • BTEC National Certificate
  • BTEC National Diploma
  • CACHE or NNEB award
  • Open College Network Credits
  • Access to Higher Education course

All applications are subject to approval by the University of Derby (UoD). In order for the University to approve your application we are required to share your personal information. This includes sharing the application form that you have completed to study this course, and in some instances, copies of your maths, English and highest-level qualification certificate.

You will attend College for one day per week for two years, plus independent study.

The course will cost £7600 per year.

Assessment methods are varied and include for example, written reports, presentations, case studies, essays and reflections. Modules are sector-related, and assessment will relate to your own organisation or vocational setting.

Upon successful completion you could progress directly into employment, onto a top up qualification at university or study the BA(Hons) Education Studies here at the College.

If you are undertaking full time study you can apply for a Maintenance Loan, this can be used to purchase materials to assist with your qualification.
