The BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Graphic and Digital Design is ideal for individuals with a passion for graphic design who thrive in a creative and dynamic environment. This course offers a hands-on, industry-focused experience, helping you develop the skills needed for a successful career in design.

Through personalised projects, you will explore topics that interest you while collaborating with local businesses on real world projects. You will gain expertise in advertising campaigns, logo design, digital concepts, graphic novels, print production, and core design principles.

Our lecturers have extensive industry experience and remain active in the media sector, ensuring that the knowledge shared in lectures is current, relevant, and practical.

As a Creative, Cultural and Business student, you will have access to all our Art, Design and Media facilities, which include two art studios, a photography studio, a darkroom, and a television studio. You will also be using industry standard software.

What will I do?

During the course, you will cover topics including:

  • Graphic Design Techniques, Processes and Communication
  • Advertising
  • Branding
  • Option Graphics
  • Mixed Media
  • Typography
  • Layout Design
  • Final Project

You will also undertake a work placement alongside your studies at the College. Staff will support with this as much as possible, it is hoped that students will find their own opportunity for a work placement.

During the course, you will also have the opportunity to complete the qualification in Earth Week – Tackling the Climate Emergency Level 3.

To study the Graphic and Digital Design Extended Diploma Level 3, you will need to have 5 GCSEs at grade 4 or above (old GCSE grade C or above) or equivalent, including English and Maths. You will also need a portfolio of work for review if you are invited for an interview.

If you do not have a portfolio of work to bring to interview, you may be set a task to complete within 2 weeks as a condition to enrolment.

The Graphic and Digital Design Extended Diploma Level 3 will take you 2 years to complete. You will attend college from 9:00am-4:30pm for 3-4 days per week at our Rochford Campus in Boston, plus independent study.

The Graphic and Digital Design Extended Diploma Level 3 is free, if you are under the age of 19 on 31 August of the year you start the course.

If you are aged 19+, this course will cost £8583.

You will be assessed through practical assessments (70%) and theory assessments (30%). This includes group work, work-based evidence, coursework, and presentations.

Successful completion of the Graphic and Digital Design Extended Diploma Level 3 opens the door to exciting opportunities in both Higher Education and employment. You can progress to university to study subjects such as Graphic Design, Art and Design, or Media, further developing your creative and technical skills.

Alternatively, you may choose to enter the workforce in a variety of creative roles, including Animator, Architect, Cartoonist, Illustrator, Interior Designer, Logo and Sign Designer, Packaging Designer, Production Designer, Storyboard Artist, Typographer, or Web Designer. These careers allow you to apply your artistic talent and design expertise across industries such as advertising, film, publishing, digital media, and branding.

Additional costs may include study materials (approximately £100) and educational visits (approximately £45). A personal laptop that is suitable for design, Adobe, and Microsoft Office software is recommended.
