Hard Work and Determination Pays off For GCSE Learners

A group of Boston College students collecting their GCSE ResultsBoston College’s English and Maths students are celebrating today after receiving their well-deserved GCSE Results.

For many of those students celebrating, these formal examinations were the first they have sat after their GCSEs at school were affected during the pandemic. The hard work and determination paid off with those students who did not achieve the grades at secondary school, now being able to progress onto their next steps within education or the workplace.

One of those students celebrating today is, Millie Jones, who after achieving a grade 4 at school decided to retake her English GCSE to allow her to progress on to the Level 3 Travel and Tourism course at the College, with the aim to become a Flight Attendant. After collecting her results Millie said, “I needed a grade 5 and I achieved a 6, so I’m very happy. After missing out on taking my GCSEs at school due to the pandemic, I was nervous to sit exams for the first time but the support at college was really good.

As well as those aged 16-18, Boston College is also proud to support adult learners to return to education to access greater opportunities for their futures. An example of this was Amy Male who was incredibly happy with a grade 7 in English and a grade 5 in Maths, she said, “After spending many years raising my children I was encouraged by my family to follow my career dream to be a Children’s Nurse. I initially studied the functional skills ‘fast track’ summer course and realised that I wanted to go further. I took my GCSE exams whilst recovering from a major operation, and I am immensely proud of my grades that have secured my place at university.”

Heather Marks, Boston College Vice Principal: Curriculum and Quality said, “Today’s results are testament to the hard work of our students, support from parents and carers, and the dedication of our staff. Everyone involved should be incredibly proud of their accomplishments.”
