During the Level 2 Public Services Extended Certificate you will examine a range of uniformed and civilian jobs in each of the Public Services.

Career opportunities within the Police , Navy, Royal Marines, Security, Army, Royal Air Force, Fire Brigade, Mountain Rescue, Ambulance, Prison Services and Border Patrol can be closer than you realise. This is a practical and exciting course where you will explore the Public Services through completion of projects, exams and assignments based on realistic workplace situations, activities and job demands.

From being upside down in a Kayak, Camping, rock climbing and learning military foot drill to studying security, law, Physical Fitness and teamwork, our staff and qualification will get you there.

What will I do?

The Level 2 Public Services Extended Certificate is made up of several units including:

    Map Reading and Navigation
  • Investigate Employment
  • Physical Fitness
  • Developing Team Work
  • Exploring Equality and Diversity

Other courses may be offered alongside the Extended Certificate such as the Award in Exercise Studies and Employability Skills which help develop the learner, widen their knowledge and ensure the learning experience is diverse and exciting.

The course is delivered using a balance between practical and theory. We include one-to-one support, Individual Learning Plans, external visits, events and speakers. The year is divided into two 17 week semesters.

If you have a Grade 2 or below in English or maths, you can study towards either a PASS in Functional Skills Level 2 or a GCSE grade 4-9. Once you have achieved either qualification, you will not be required to undertake any further English or maths.

Full time 16-19 learner with a Grade 3, must study towards a GCSE grade 4-9.

The entry qualifications for the Level 2 Public Services Extended Certificate are four GCSEs at grade 3 or above (Old GCSE grade D or above) including English and Maths (or equivalent).

You may also progress onto this course with the successful completion of a Level 1 Diploma in Public Services (or similar) along with Level 1 Functional Skills English and Maths and a satisfactory reference.

The Public Services Extended Certificate will take you one year to complete. You will attend College for three days a week, plus independent study.

The Public Services Extended Certificate is free, if you are under the age of 19 on 31 August of the year you start the course.

If you are aged 19+, this course will cost £1200
If full course payment is made on the first day of the course a discount may apply.

Please note that all fees are subject to change.

You will be assessed using a variety of different methods, which include observation, written assessments and discussions with tutor. All units are internally assessed and graded at Pass, Merit or Distinction.

Successful completion of the Level 2 Public Services Extended Certificate to a merit or distinction standard along with a good attendance record and positive reference from your tutor could lead to progression on to a Level 3 course.

Students could also go into careers such as the Emergency Services, the Armed Forces and the Security Industry.

Additional costs include purchasing an A4 folder for your work, pen, pencil and paper.

Fees towards the cost of educational visits and activities are approx. £50

The wearing of a uniform is mandatory.
