The Pearson BTEC Level 5 HND in International Travel and Tourism Management provides a real, local alternative for those who are considering university or who want to add to their qualification portfolio in order to progress their employment opportunities.

Having been developed by Pearson, the course equips individuals with the knowledge, understanding and skills needed in the field of travel and tourism and provide opportunities to develop a range of skills, techniques and attributes essential for a range of careers in the travel and tourism sector. The course is recognised by the Student Loans Company for the advancement of student loans to enable learners to pay fees and study.

What will I do?

The Level 5 HND is a two year course. During your first year you will study a Level 4 HNC. Upon successful completion of the first year, you will then progress on to the second year to study the Level 5 HND.

During your first year, HNC, you will study eight units covering a range of topics, including:

  • The Contemporary Travel and Tourism Industry
  • Managing the Customer Experience
  • Leadership and Management for Service Industries
  • Professional Identity and Practice
  • The Travel and Tourism Business Toolkit
  • Visitor Attraction Management
  • Tour Operations Management
  • Marketing Essentials for Travel and Tourism

During your second year, HND, you will further study Tourism Consumer Behaviour and Insight as well as five further units which will broaden your knowledge and skills in key areas such as Destination Management, Events Management and Tour Operations. You will also complete a Research Project – Double Unit.

The HND in Travel and Tourism Management is delivered by staff who have a wide range of knowledge and experience in the travel and tourism sector and offers students the chance to develop the personal skills, confidence and knowledge required for work in such an environment.

A DM profile on a Travel and Tourism BTEC Level 3 Diploma course; a MMP profile on the BTEC Extended Diploma or a related subject (minimum 80 new UCAS points), or an Access to Higher Education qualification.

You will also need a Level 2 qualification or above in English and Maths (e.g. GCSE or Functional Skills) and/or minimum IELTS score 6.

Individual cases will be considered and please note relevant work experience will also be taken in to consideration if you fall outside of any of these categories.

The HND can also be studied as a one year top-up if you already hold a relevant HNC.

This course will take you 2 years, September to May, to complete. You will study at College for 2 days a week, 9.00am-4.00pm, plus independent study.

During your programme of study, 20% will be within lectures and 80% through independent study.

The International Travel and Tourism Management HND course fees will be:
HNC, Year 1 (2020) - £6550.
HND, Year 2 (2021) - £6550.

Your assessment consists of a variety of coursework and practical examination e.g. presentations and group discussions.

The assessment of Pearson's Higher National qualifications are criterion-referenced and you will provide evidence in the form of assignments which are assessed against the unit learning outcomes and assessment criteria.

After successful completion of the HND progression on to an undergraduate degree or further professional qualifications in a related area are possible.
