The Pearson Higher National Certificate (HNC) Diploma in Tourism Management is the equivalent to the 1st year of a University Degree and provides a real, local alternative for those who are considering university or who want to add to their qualification portfolio in order to progress their employment opportunities.

The course has been developed to equip you with the knowledge, understanding and skills needed in the field of travel and tourism and provide opportunities to develop a range of skills, techniques and attributes essential for a range of careers in the travel and tourism sector. The course is recognised by the Student Loans Company for the advancement of student loans to enable you to pay fees and study.

What will I do?

During the Tourism Management HNC you study eight units, including:

  • The Contemporary Travel and Tourism Industry
  • Managing the Customer Experience
  • Leadership and Management for Service Industries
  • Professional Identity and Practice
  • The Travel and Tourism Business Toolkit
  • Visitor Attraction Management
  • Tour Operations Management
  • Marketing Essentials for Travel and Tourism

You can apply to study on a one year HNC or a two year Higher National Diploma (HND). If studying on the one year HNC the units that have been achieved in the first year are carried forward towards the HND. In this case, the overall grade will be on your HND performance.

The course will be delivered by staff who have a wide range of knowledge and experience in the travel and tourism sector and offers you the chance to develop the personal skills, confidence and knowledge required to work in such an environment.

The entry qualifications for the Tourism Management HNC are a DM profile on a Travel and Tourism BTEC Level 3 Diploma course; an MMP profile on the BTEC Extended Diploma or a related subject (minimum 80 new UCAS points), or an Access to HE qualification.

You will also need a Level 2 qualification or above in English and Maths (e.g. GCSE or Functional Skills) and/or minimum IELTS score 6.

Individual cases will be considered and please note relevant work experience will be taken in to consideration if you fall outside of any of these categories.

The Tourism Management HNC will take you one year to complete. You will study at College for two days a week, 9:00am-4:00pm, plus independent study. Part time options may be available.

During your programme of study, 30% will be within lectures and 70% through independent study.

The International Travel and Tourism Management HNC will cost you £7100.

The assessment of Pearson's Higher National qualifications are criterion-referenced and you will provide evidence in the form of assignments, which are assessed against the unit learning outcomes and assessment criteria.

All units are individually graded as a pass, merit or distinction. A pass is awarded for the achievement of all outcomes against the specified assessment criteria. Merit and distinction grades are awarded for higher level achievement.

Your assessment consists of 89% coursework and 11% practical examination e.g. presentations and group discussions.

The Tourism Management HNC will enable progression on to the Tourism Management HND, which can be studied at Boston College.

A key progression path for Pearson HNC and HND learners is to the second or third year of a degree or honours degree programme depending on the degree in question.

These qualifications are highly valued by employers and can lead to careers in the travel and tourism industry, as well as other business related careers.
