The Level 4 Education and Training Certificate (CET) is a first stage teaching qualification, which has a teaching/training practice requirement.

The Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training (CET) is a teaching qualification aimed at those already in a post 16 teaching or training position. You must have access to 30 hours of teaching over the duration of the course. 'Teaching/Training' refers to a wide range of situations and need not to be in a formal education establishment e.g. those who deliver staff training within their place of work.

It is an ‘in service’ course designed for those working or wishing to work as teachers or trainers. It may be possible for pre-service teachers or trainers (defined as those who are not formally contracted as teachers or trainers) and any teacher or trainer.

What will I do?

During the Level 4 Education and Training Certificate (CET) you will study the relevant units for learning and development that will include:

  • The role and responsibilities and relationship in education and training (for those without a previous teaching qualification such as PTLLS or equivalent)
  • Planning to meet the need of learners in education and training
  • Delivering education and training
  • Assessing learners in education and training
  • Using resources for education and training
  • Current issues in education and training

These units will enable you to gain the understanding of the roles and responsibilities of a teacher or trainer in relation to legislation, equality, diversity, inclusivity and meeting the needs of learners. You will be able to use initial and diagnostic assessments, plan, and deliver inclusive teaching and learning. You will also be able to assess learning and use appropriate resources to support effective learning.

Alongside the mandatory units are you also choose optional units that will suit your specialist area or teaching and learning.

You will be expected to be in teaching and learning environment either through employment or on a voluntary basis, for 30 teaching practice hours throughout the academic year.

As a student at Boston College, you will have access to refectory areas, learning resource centre, ICT and Moodle (VLE). In addition, there are learners’ services, learner support and career advice are available.

You may have access to certain visiting speakers within the taught sessions throughout the course. Professional speakers that will deliver in areas of reflective practice and the use of effective teaching and learning strategies.

The entry qualifications/requirements for the Level 4 Education and Training Certificate (CET) are:

  • You must be aged 19 and over to study this course.
  • A Level 3 qualification in your own subject specialism, or Education and Training Award Level 3.
  • You must also have a minimum of 30 hours teaching/relevant training practice. ‘Teaching/Training’ refers to a wide range of situations and need not be in a formal education establishment e.g. those who deliver staff training within their place of work.
  • You must also have a reasonable level of literacy, language, numeracy and ICT skills.

If you are concerned about the above entry requirements an alternative course available is the Education and Training Award Level 3.

The Education and Training Certificate (CET) will take you one year to complete. You will attend College every Tuesday evening, 5:00pm – 8:30pm.

There will be an element of independent study, this will be through you completing a combination of written assignments, and building a portfolio of evidence where reflective and evaluative practice is evidenced.

The Education and Training Certificate (CET) will cost £1417.

The Education and Training Certificate (CET) will be 50% practical and 50% theory. The course will enable you to develop skills in a combination of study through written theory assignments and demonstration of practice within your teaching and learning environment.

Successful completion of the Level 4 Education and Training Certificate (CET) can lead onto higher level courses such as the Education and Training Diploma Level 5. You can also progressed onto employment.
