Upon completion of the Level 3 Supporting the Delivery of Physical Education and School Sport Apprenticeship you will receive a 1st4sport Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Supporting the Delivery of Physical Education and School Sport.

This apprenticeship is a competence-based qualification that confirms occupational competency for those operating in a school sport setting and provides an introduction to further to work within physical education and school sport as a higher-level teaching assistant (HLTA), teaching assistant (TA), sports development officer, sports coach, volunteer or leader.

What will I do?

The Level 3 Supporting the Delivery of Physical Education and School Sport Apprenticeship is made of 12 units:

  • Communication and professional relationships with children, young people and adults
  • Schools as organisations
  • Understand Child and Young Person Development
  • Understand How to Safeguard the Wellbeing of Children and Young People
  • Support assessment for learning
  • Plan a Physical Education and School Sport Programme
  • Deliver a Physical Education and School Sport Programme
  • Review the Delivery of a Physical Education and School Sport Programme
  • Organise and lead a sports event or competition
  • Preparing for the mentoring role
  • Support gifted and talented learners
  • Facilitate community-based sport and physical activity

In addition, the Award in Employment Awareness in Active Leisure and Learning (Level 3).

If you do not hold an English or maths qualifications equivalent to Level 2 Functional Skills or above, you will be required to be study these in addition to your apprenticeship, however acceptance on the course without such qualifications will be dependent interview and diagnostic assessments.

The entry qualifications for the Level 3 Supporting the Delivery of Physical Education and School Sport Apprenticeship are five GCSEs at grades C or above (New GCSE grade 4 or above), including English, maths and a level 2 physical or sport related qualification.

Acceptable Level 2 Sports qualifications include the 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Learning in Physical Education and School Sport, GCSE in Physical Education (Grades A-C / 4+), a Level 2 National Governing Body of Sport coaching qualification, a Level 2 BTEC in Sport or a Level 2 qualification in sports/activity leadership.

The Supporting the Delivery of Physical Education and School Sport Apprenticeship will take between 15 and 18 months to complete. You will study at college one day a week and four days a week with your employer.

The Apprenticeship is an independent learning programme. You will complete a qualification during your training and will be expected to complete assignments on time.

As an Apprentice, you will pay no course fees. However, your employer may have to pay towards your training as well as providing you with a wage (please see below).

All Apprentices will receive a minimum wage of £3.90 per hour within their first year of training from their employer, although they can, and often do, pay more.

In the second and subsequent years of an Apprenticeship programme, the following applies:

Under 18s – the required national minimum wage of £4.35 per hour.

18–20 year olds - the required national minimum wage of £6.15 per hour.

21-24 year olds - the required national minimum wage of £7.70 per hour.

25 year olds and over – the required national minimum wage of £8.21 per hour.

The Supporting the Delivery of Physical Education and School Sport Apprenticeship is assessed 40% practical and 60% theory.

You will be assessed in a variety of ways such as group work, case studies, research presentations, workbooks and practical work-based evidence.

Completion of the Supporting the Delivery of Physical Education and School Sport Apprenticeship could lead onto an HNC / HND or Foundation degree in Sport and/or Educational based subjects.

Employment in the PE & School Sports industry with opportunities to become a higher-level teaching assistant (HLTA), teaching assistant (TA), sports development officer, sports coach, volunteer or leader.
