The Level 4 Sport and Exercise Sciences HNC is the equivalent to the 1st year of a University Degree and is designed for students who wish to gain a sports qualification to further their career aspirations in the sports and leisure industries, or prepare them for further training or higher education.

This is a vocational qualification delivered over two days, designed to develop theoretical knowledge and apply it into a practical setting to progress into this rapidly increasing industry of sport and exercise science.

What will I do?

During the Sport and Exercise Sciences HNC, you will study a range of units including:

  • Anatomy and Physiology
  • Fundamentals of Sport and Exercise Psychology
  • Professional Skills
  • Nutrition
  • Training, Fitness Testing
  • Community Coaching
  • Sports Massage
  • Physical Activity, Lifestyle and Health

Each module is assessed through a range of coursework assignments, presentations, practical group and individual work.

Varied teaching strategies and learning environments are used which include classrooms, human physiology and science laboratories, and sports field and sports hall. The College also has links with a variety of local sporting organisations.

The entry qualifications for the Sport and Exercise Sciences HNC are an MMP profile on the BTEC Level 3 course or a related subject OR 2Cs and 1D at A-level (minimum 80 new UCAS points), or an Access to HE qualification.

You will also need a Level 2 qualification or above in English and Maths (e.g. GCSE or Functional Skills)

Individual cases will be considered and please note relevant work experience will also be taken in to consideration if you fall outside of any of these categories.

The Sport and Exercise Sciences HNC will take you one year to complete. You will attend Boston College’s Peter Paine Performance Centre in Boston for two days a week.

The Sport and Exercise Sciences HNC will cost you £5550.

The assessment of Pearson's Higher National qualifications are criterion-referenced and you will provide evidence in the form of assignments, which are assessed against the unit learning outcomes and assessment criteria.

All units are individually graded as a pass, merit or distinction. A pass is awarded for the achievement of all outcomes against the specified assessment criteria. Merit and distinction grades are awarded for higher level achievement.

Successful completion of the course should enhance your prospects of finding a career within the health, leisure or sports industries.

It will also enable you to progress onto the Level 5 HND Diploma course (an additional year) which will allow progression onto university to achieve a degree perhaps in the areas of PE/Sports Teaching or Sport and Exercise Science.
