The Photography Award Level 1 is aimed at those who have an interest in photography and are looking to advance their basic skills to improve their finished images. During this course, you will first look at developing your understanding of your camera, its settings and its many capabilities. You will then experiment with your image taking, looking at portrait and landscape photography as a starting point.

You will study in a fully functional photography studio, as well as having access to a dark room and a mac suite for digital elements.

What will I do?

During the Level 1 Photography Award, you will study topics such as:

  • Use a camera to capture creative images
  • Introduction to capturing and producing images of people
  • Introduction to capturing and producing images of landscapes

There are no formal entry qualifications for the Photography Award, however you must have the appropriate equipment, such as a Digital SLR.

The Photography Award Level 1 will take you 20 weeks to complete. You will attend college at our Boston (Rochford) Campus 1 day per week, 6:00pm-8:00pm. You will also be expected to undertake additional work at home in order to back up classroom activity.

The Photography Award Level 1 is free, if you are under the age of 19 on 31 August of the year you start the course.

If you are aged 19+, this course will cost £191.

Fee remission may apply depending on personal circumstances, please enquire with the Registry Department for further information on 01205 365701 or email fees@boston.ac.uk.

Please note that all fees are subject to change.

You will be assessed via practical application, with annotation required in sketchbooks.

However, further education, employment; including entry-level roles in the creative industries, and apprenticeships are all progression routes. Eligible candidates may pass this course and progress on to our Higher Education courses.
