The Level 1 Photography Award is aimed at those who have an interest in photography and are looking to advance their basic skills to improve their finished images.

Within the course, you will first look at developing your understanding of your camera, its settings and its many capabilities. You will then experiment with your image taking, looking at portrait and landscape photography as a starting point.

You will achieve a Level 1 qualification in photography, which will allow you to progress to Level 2 courses in the future.

What will I do?

During the Level 1 Photography Award, you will study three units:

  • Use a camera to capture creative images
  • Introduction to capturing and producing images of people
  • Introduction to capturing and producing images of landscapes
  • As well as selective units based on photographic genres such as portrait, landscape or events

You will study in a fully functional photography studio, as well as having access to a dark room and a mac suite for digital elements.

In addition to your course, you may also study either Functional Skills or GCSE English and Maths, dependent on your current GCSE grade.

There are no formal entry qualifications for the Photography Award.

You must have the appropriate equipment, such as a Digital SLR.

Photography Award Level 1 will take you 4 months to completes you will attend college one evening a week at our Boston Campus (Rochford).

There is an expectation to complete photography at home to back up the classroom activity.

The Photography Award is free, if you are under the age of 19 on 31 August of the year you start the course.

If you are aged 19+, this course will cost £191.

The Photography Award content will be practical application, with annotation required in sketchbooks. The idea of the course is to give you complete confidence in using your camera, and the multiple functions. Under the guidance of the subject specialist lecturer, you will have a strong understanding of your camera's capabilities.

Successful completion could lead onto a Level 2 course.

Additional costs include a requirement to purchase sketchbooks and photo paper for printing your submitted work. This cost is an approximation of £25-50, depending on project choice.
