The Pearson BTEC Level 4 Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Performing Arts is the equivalent to the 1st year of a University Degree.This course is for those who wish to gain a performing arts qualification to further their career aspirations in the creative industries, or prepare them for further training or higher education.This is a vocational qualification delivered over two days, designed to develop theoretical knowledge and apply it into a practical setting to progress into one of the fastest growing sector in the UK.Studying the one year HNC will provide units that can be carried forward towards the HND. In this case, the overall grade will be on your HND performance.

What will I do?

During the Performing Arts HNC you will study a range of units such as:
  • Creative Arts Research Skills (core)
  • Creative Arts Professional Practice (core)
  • Managing a Creative Business
  • Acting Techniques
  • Musical Theatre Performance
  • Devising Performance
  • Dance Techniques
  • Vocal and Voice Techniques
Each module is assessed through a range of coursework assignments, presentations, practical group and individual work.Varied teaching strategies and learning environments are used which include classrooms, portable theatre setups, dance studios and recording studio facilities. The College also have links with a variety of local performing arts venues and businesses.You will also be required to set up and organize a creative business during the course.

The entry qualifications for the Performing Arts HNC are an MMP profile on the BTEC Level 3 course or a related subject (minimum 80 new UCAS points), or an Access to HE qualification.You will also need a Level 2 qualification or above in English and Maths (e.g. GCSE or Functional Skills) and/or minimum IELTS score 6.Individual cases will be considered and please note relevant work experience will also be taken in to consideration if you fall outside of any of these categories.

The Performing Arts HNC will take you one year to complete. You will attend Boston College’s Sam Newsom Centre for two days a week, including 18 hours a week independent study.During your programme of study 25% will be within lecturers and 75% through independent study.

The Performing Arts HNC will cost you £5550.

The assessment of Pearson's Higher National qualifications are criterion-referenced and you will provide evidence in the form of assignments which are assessed against the unit learning outcomes and assessment criteria.All units are individually graded as a pass, merit or distinction. A pass is awarded for the achievement of all outcomes against the specified assessment criteria. Merit and distinction grades are awarded for higher level achievement.Your assessment consists of 64% coursework and 36% practical examination e.g. presentations and group discussions.

Successful completion of the course should enhance your prospects of finding a career within the creative industries.It will also enable you to progress onto the Performing Arts HND Level 5 course (an additional year) which will allow progression onto university to achieve a degree specializing in performing arts.
