The Pearson Level 5 HND is a two year programme with the first year containing the same modules as the HNC whilst the second year provides greater breadth and specialisation and is the equivalent to the 2nd year of the University Degree.

This course is designed for those who wish to gain a music qualification to further your career aspirations in the creative industries, or prepare you for further training or higher education.

This is a vocational qualification that will develop your theoretical knowledge and apply it into a practical setting to progress into one of the fastest growing sectors in the UK.

What will I do?

During the HNC you will study a range of units including:

  • Creative Arts Research Skills (core)
  • Music in Context (core)
  • Computer Music System
  • Creative Arts Professionals
  • Managing a Creative Business
  • Music Performance Skills
  • Song Writing Techniques and Skills
  • Studio Recording and Engineering

In your second HND year, you will study a range of units covering performance, production and the music business during the course, as well as setting up your own creative business. Engineering

Varied teaching strategies and learning environments are used which include classrooms, rehearsal rooms, recording studios, large recital hall, production studios, DJ technology rooms and IT suite.

The College also has links with a variety of local music venues.

A MMP profile on the RSL Level 3 course or a related subject (minimum 80 new UCAS points), or an Access to HE qualification.

You will also need a Level 2 qualification or above in English and Maths (e.g. GCSE or Functional Skills) and/or minimum IELTS score 6.

Individual cases will be considered and please note relevant work experience will also be taken in to consideration if you fall outside of any of these categories.

The HND can also be studied as a one year top-up if you already hold a relevant HNC.

This course will take you 2 years to complete. You will study at the Sam Newsom Music Centre for 2 days a week.

During your programme of study 30% will be within lecturers and 70% through independent study.

The Music HND course fees will be:
HNC, Year 1 (2019) - £5550
HND, Year 2 (2020) - £5550

If you started this course in September 2018, the course fees will be:
Year 1, HNC (2018) - £5500
Year 2, HND (2019) - £5500

The assessment of Pearson's Higher National qualifications are criterion-referenced and you will provide evidence in the form of assignments which are assessed against the unit learning outcomes and assessment criteria.

All units are individually graded as a pass, merit or distinction. A pass is awarded for the achievement of all outcomes against the specified assessment criteria. Merit and distinction grades are awarded for higher level achievement.

Your assessment consists of 67% coursework and 33% practical examination e.g. presentations and group discussions.

Successful completion of the course should enhance your prospects of finding a career within the creative industries.

It will also enable you to have the opportunity to progress onto university and top-up your qualification a to degree in the area of Music/Music Technology, live sound or event management.
