The Pearson BTEC Level 4 Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Music is the equivalent to the 1st year of a University Degree.

This course is designed for those who wish to gain a music qualification to further their career aspirations in the creative industries, or prepare them for further training or higher education.

This is a vocational qualification delivered over 2 days, designed to develop theoretical knowledge and apply it into a practical setting to progress into one of the fastest growing sectors in the UK.

Studying the one year HNC will provide units that can be carried forward towards the HND. In this case, the overall grade will be on your HND performance.

What will I do?

During the Music HNC you will study a range of units including:

  • Creative Arts Research Skills (core)
  • Music in Context (core)
  • Computer Music System
  • Creative Arts Professionals
  • Managing a Creative Business
  • Music Performance Skills
  • Song Writing Techniques and Skills
  • Studio Recording and Engineering

Each module is assessed through a range of coursework assignments, presentations, practical group and individual work.

Varied teaching strategies and learning environments are used which include classrooms, rehearsal rooms, recording studios, large recital hall, production studios, DJ Technology rooms and IT suite. The College also has links with a variety of local music venues.

During the course, you will be required to set up and organise a creative business.

The entry qualifications for the Music HNC are an MMP profile on the RSL Level 3 course or a related subject (minimum 80 new UCAS points), or an Access to HE qualification.

You will also need a Level 2 qualification or above in English and Maths (e.g. GCSE or Functional Skills) and/or minimum IELTS score 6.

Individual cases will be considered and please note relevant work experience will also be taken in to consideration if you fall outside of any of these categories.

The Music HNC will take you one year to complete. You will attend Boston College’s Sam Newsom Centre for two days a week, including 18 hours a week independent study.

During your programme of study 30% will be within lecturers and 70% through independent study.

The Music HNC will cost you £5550.

The assessment of Pearson's Higher National qualifications are criterion-referenced and you will provide evidence in the form of assignments which are assessed against the unit learning outcomes and assessment criteria.

All units are individually graded as a pass, merit or distinction. A pass is awarded for the achievement of all outcomes against the specified assessment criteria. Merit and distinction grades are awarded for higher level achievement.

Your assessment consists of 67% coursework and 33% practical examination e.g. presentations and group discussions.

Successful completion of the course will enhance your prospects of finding a career within the creative industries.

It will also enable you to progress onto Music HND Level 5 (an additional year) which will allow progression onto university to achieve a degree in the area of Music or Music Technology.
