The Level 1 Transport Maintenance – Light Vehicle Diploma helps to build and equip you with the knowledge of basic vehicle systems for a modern motor vehicle. The latest industry standard workshop equipment is available to give you the opportunity to gain hands on realistic and practical experience on a selection of specialist training rigs and vehicles.

What will I do?

The Level 1 Transport Maintenance – Light Vehicle Diploma is delivered in theory and practical workshops, covering health and safety, good housekeeping, job roles within the automotive industry, materials and fabrication and vehicle system identification in the following subjects:

  • Health and safety procedures
  • General good housekeeping activities
  • Foundation engineering unit
  • Light vehicle engines
  • Light vehicle chassis systems
  • Light vehicle electrical systems
  • Light vehicle braking systems
  • Light vehicle suspensions systems
  • Light vehicle Steering systems

Delivery of the qualification is supplemented by visits to museums and shows, this helps broaden your perspective of progression opportunities following successful completion of the course.

Individual Learning Plans: You will have a personal tutor to help you to plan your learning journey on an individual basis. This is your opportunity to plan realistic targets and maximise your potential.

If you have a Grade 2 or below in English or maths, you can study towards either a PASS in Functional Skills Level 2 or a GCSE grade 4-9. Once you have achieved either qualification, you will not be required to undertake any further English or maths.

Full time 16-19 learner with a Grade 3, must study towards a GCSE grade 4-9.

Entry requirements are two GCSEs at grades 2 or above (Old GCSE grade E or above) or equivalent (to include English or maths), or any one of the following, an Entry 3 qualification, a Certificate in Skills for Working Life or Life Skills, an ESOL Entry L3 qualification.

If you are unable to meet these entry requirements enrolment onto our Pathways to Progress provision will prepare you for progression into the curriculum area of your choice, either in-year (depending on progress made in the first six weeks) or the following September. We also offer full time ESOL courses which give you opportunity to develop your language skills further prior to progression into the curriculum area of your choice the following September.

The Transport Maintenance – Light Vehicle Diploma will take you one year to complete. You will attend College four days a week, 9:00am – 4:30pm.

You will be expected to have a minimum attendance rate of 90%.

The Transport Maintenance – Light Vehicle Diploma is free, if you are under the age of 19 on 31 August of the year you start the course.

If you are aged 19+, this course will cost £1200.
If full course payment is made on the first day of the course a discount may apply.

Successful completion of each unit is achieved by passing online exams and practical competency assessments.

Successful completion of the Transport Maintenance – Light Vehicle Diploma allows you to apply for an automotive Apprenticeship or continue your studies on the Level 2 Motor Vehicle Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair IMI Diploma.

Specific Progression routes – FE, Apprenticeship, Employment

Additional costs include:

  • Cost of corporate clothing as per subject area requirements (will be discussed at interview)
  • Contribution towards educational visits
  • Educational materials (pens, folders etc.)
