The Level 2 Motor Vehicle Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair IMI Diploma builds on the Level 1 Motor Vehicle Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair IMI Diploma and provides you with the knowledge of light vehicle technology and the skills in removal and refitting of components.

The Certificate in Automotive Customer Service Skills is built in as part of the course providing the skills required to support customers and staff, and broaden future career opportunities.

What will I do?

The Level 2 Motor Vehicle Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair IMI Diploma is delivered theory and practical workshops, covering health, safety and good housekeeping activities, job roles within the automotive industry, materials and fabrication and knowledge in the following subjects:

  • Light Vehicle Maintenance
  • Light Vehicle Engine Units
  • Light Vehicle Lubrication and Cooling Systems
  • Light Vehicle Fuel, Air and Exhaust Systems
  • Light Vehicle Electrical Units
  • Light Vehicle Chassis Units and Components
  • Light Vehicle Transmission and Driveline Units
  • Skills in Customer Service in the Automotive Industry

You will be given the opportunity to take part in educational visits to leading motor manufacture organisations, museums and international shows. This will give the learner a greater prospective of future career and progression opportunities.

In addition to the main qualification, you will study:

  • Hybrid Vehicle Technology

Individual Learning Plans: You will have a personal tutor to help you plan your learning journey on an individual basis. This gives the learner the opportunity to discuss concerns with tutor and set individual educational targets to maximise potential and achievement.

If you have a Grade 2 or below in English or maths, you can study towards either a PASS in Functional Skills Level 2 or a GCSE grade 4-9. Once you have achieved either qualification, you will not be required to undertake any further English or maths.

Full time 16-19 learner with a Grade 3, must study towards a GCSE grade 4-9.

The entry qualifications for the Level 2 Motor Vehicle Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair IMI Diploma are three GCSEs at grades 3 or above (Old GCSE grade D or above) including Maths and English. Alternatively, successful completion of Level 1 Motor Vehicle Course.

The Motor Vehicle Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair IMI Diploma will take you one year to complete. You will attend College for four days a week, 9:00am – 4:30pm.

You will be expected to have a minimum attendance rate of 90%.

The Motor Vehicle Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair IMI Diploma is free, if you are under the age of 19 on 31 August of the year you start the course.

If you are aged 19+, this course will cost £1200.
If full course payment is made on the first day of the course a discount may apply.

Successful completion of each unit is achieved by online exams and practical competency assessments.

Successful completion of the Level 2 Motor Vehicle Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair IMI Diploma allows you to progress on to the Level 3 Motor Vehicle Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair IMI Diploma or apply for an automotive Apprenticeship.

Additional costs include:

  • Cost of corporate clothing as per subject area requirements (will be discussed at interview)
  • Contribution towards educational visits
  • Educational resource (pens, folders, text books etc.)
