Creative media is the perfect course for anyone who has a passion and love for Television, Film and Animation. This is a practical and industry-focused course which will enable you to progress onto a career as a filmmaker, animator, games designer, YouTuber, social media content producer, Podcaster or a radio producer. You will work within our versatile Film and TV Studio and creative editing suites to gain experience in the planning and production of a wide variety of media products, as well as engaging with local and national businesses to work on live industry briefs.

You will learn to produce both fictional and factual films, animations, social media content (such as YouTube) and much more. Your lecturers all have a working knowledge of the media industry and are still actively involved in the business outside of the College, resulting in accurate, up to date knowledge being shared in lectures.

What will I do?

During the first year, you will undertake two units. The first of which is based on Skills Development through the majority of the year, the second focuses on your ability to meet a practical brief at the end of the year.

During the second year, you will study a further two/three units. The first of which focuses on progression routes, building your portfolio, applying for University courses and/or embarking on a career as a freelancer. The second unit is a final year project, in which you will manage a Creative Media Project based on an Industry brief. The third is an optional Level 4 unit, looking at self-reflection in your own skills and development as an Industry Practitioner.

As a Creative Media Practice student, you will have access to all of our facilities, including a dedicated, versatile Studio and three iMac editing suites, and you will have access to a wide range of industry standard equipment and software, including Adobe Creative Cloud.

Work experience will be sourced with local and national employers to give you real world freelance experiences that relate to the creative sector. You will be supported in identifying organisations for your placements, or you can generate these from your own contacts.

You will go on trips to visit places such as the Harry Potter Studios, the Aesthetica Short Film Festival, Film Studios and course related museum visits. You will also have the chance to meet a number of guest speakers who work in different areas of the industry.

In addition to your course, you may also study either Functional Skills or GCSE English and Maths, dependent on your current GCSE grade.

The entry qualifications for the Level 3 Creative Media Practice National Extended Diploma are five GCSEs at grades 4 or above (Old GCSE grade C or above) or equivalent, and a portfolio of work, or a Level 2 qualification to a Merit standard.

If you do not have a portfolio of work to bring to the interview, you may be set a task to complete within 2 weeks as a condition to enrolment.

The Creative Media Practice National Extended Diploma will take you two years to complete. You will study at College for three-four days a week, 9:00am - 4:30pm, plus six-eight hours of independent study.

This Creative Media Practice National Extended Diploma is free for those who are under 19 on 31 August of the year they start their course.
