The Foundation Certificate in Environmental Management (FCIEM) has been developed in line with the IEMA Associate Membership Standard to equip individuals with the knowledge and skills needed to initiate a career in environment/sustainability. It focuses on environmental management and assisting/supporting improvements in the sustainability of organisations, products, and services.

The Associate Membership Standard is aimed at persons who might be:

  • Playing a supporting role in sustainability-related projects and programmes
  • Collecting and collating data in an environmental or sustainability context
  • Completing routine checks on legislative measures or pollution prevention measures
  • Providing advice and information to others
  • Addressing environmental/sustainability as part of a wider role – for example, facilities managers or health and safety professionals
  • Starting a career as an environmental/sustainability specialist

What will I do?

The Course is split over the following 11 topics:.
1. Why we need to be sustainable.
2. Environmental principles.
3. Principles of sustainable organisations.
4. Pollution and pollution control.
5. Introduction to policy and legislation.
6. Key environmental legislation.
7. Environmental tools and assessment.
8. Data and reporting.
9. Environmental management systems.
10. Environmental auditing.
11. Improving sustainability performance.

The 11 topics have been written to ensuer the learner comes away from the course having achieved the 13 learning outcomes for this course. The 13 are split into 3 categories:

Core Knowledge.
1. Outline the implications of global trends for the environment, for society, for the economy, and for organisations.
2. Outline sustainable business/governance principles and their relationship with organisations, products, and services.

Technical Knowledge.
3. Outline environmental principles and their relationship with organisations, products, and services.
4. Outline major policy and legislation and their implications for organisations, products, and services.
5. Outline major tools, techniques, systems, and practices used to improve sustainability performance.
6. Outline the role of innovation and other leading practices in developing sustainable products and services and providing sustainable solutions.

Knowledge of Skills.
7. Collect data, perform analysis, and evaluate information.
8. Research and plan to provide sustainable solutions.
9. Deliver effective communication methods and capture feedback.
10. Engage with stakeholders.
11. Outline tools and techniques that identify opportunities and risks.
12. Identify and propose ways to improve performance.
13. Support change and transformation to improve sustainability.

This Foundation Certificate in Environmental Management will take you 5 sessions to complete over 5 weeks. Starting Tuesday 7th May 2024 you will attend our Boston Campus (Rochford) between 9:00am and 4:30pm on the below dates:

  • Tuesday 7th May 2024
  • 14th May 2024
  • Tuesday 4th June 2024
  • Tuesday 11th June 2024
  • Tuesday 18th June 2024
  • Please note: You will need to attend on all 5 dates in order to complete the course.

IEMA Foundation Certificate in Environmental Management FCIEM will cost Β£1200 per person.
