The purpose of the Level 2 Understanding the Safe Handling of Medication in Health and Social Care Certificate is to develop your knowledge and understanding of how to administer, store, dispose of and process medicines safely, and provides learners with an understanding of medication and prescriptions. This qualification is intended to prepare learners’ skills in this subject area and to prepare them for further learning or training.

This course is only suitable for those already working within a Health and Social Care environment or similar setting as you will need to draw on workplace experiences. This qualification can be used to update and continue your professional development, (CPD), and to develop knowledge/skills relevant to the occupational specialisation.

You will have 1-1 support from an assessor within the health and social care department. Your assessor is occupational competent and will support and work with you throughout the qualification period.

Please note - Learners studying a Health and Social Care course need to meet current Government legal requirements relating to COVID-19 vaccination status when working in the health and social care sector. This means learners must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19, this includes being double vaccinated and having received a booster. Learners need to meet this legal requirement to be able to attend placement, without attending placement learners cannot complete their qualifications.

If you think you may be medically exempt from the COVID-19 mandatory vaccination. Learners will need to provide evidence of an NHS Covid pass medical exemption. There is further guidance on how to apply for a medical exemption and prove you are unable to get vaccinated on the government website.

What will I do?

The Level 2 Understanding the Safe Handling of Medication in Health and Social Care Certificate is made up of four key units:

  • Unit 1 - Understand medication and prescriptions
  • Unit 2 - Supply, storage and disposal of medication
  • Unit 3 - Understand the requirements for the safe administration of medication
  • Unit 4 - Record keeping and audit processes for medication administration and storage

There are no formal entry qualifications for the Level 2 Understanding the Safe Handling of Medication in Health and Social Care Certificate.

This course will take you five months to complete.

This course is assessor led. You will be assessed by a qualified assessor on a monthly basis throughout the duration of the course

Completion of this course will enable you to progress onto a Level 3 course at the college.
